About Us
Hospice Line is an innovative service run collaboratively by St Michael&s Hospice and St Wilfrid&s Hospice to provide specialist palliative care advice and emotional support by telephone for people being cared for at home. The service helps ensure people feel supported throughout the night, maintains continuity of care, and can help avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
We want to recruit and retain the most diversely talented people and have a workforce representative of our community. We aspire to be a place where everyone feels welcome; whether you are cared for or supported by us, employed by us, volunteer for us, or support us in any way. We recognise that being a diverse and inclusive organisation will enable us to achieve our vision of a kind, resilient and empowered community.
The role:
You will be employed by one of the partner hospices and have the choice of being based at either St Michael’s Hospice in St Leonards or St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne. Remote working may be considered for experienced staff after a successful probation period, but this is not guaranteed.
As the Hospice Line HCA, you will often be the first professional that patients, families, or carers speak to during the night. The calls you take may include:
-
Providing calm, compassionate emotional support
-
Reassuring families who are worried, distressed, or unsure what to do
-
Coordinating community visits through urgent response or district nursing teams
-
Recording changes in a person’s condition
-
Taking calls notifying the hospice of a patient’s death - where you may be the first person a bereaved family member speaks to
You will use excellent communication and active listening skills to understand what callers need, ask the right questions, and provide safe and appropriate next steps. All calls must be recorded clearly and accurately in the electronic patient record to support continuity of care.
This is a role where you can make a meaningful difference, offering unhurried, compassionate support at night when people are often at their most vulnerable.
Employee Benefits
We offer a friendly, team orientated work environment – a good pension scheme with the option to continue any existing NHS pension scheme membership, an Employee Assistance Programme, generous annual leave, subsidised employee meals and free refreshments, free parking, supportive supervision and a proactive Education Department to support with your development. Hospice employees also qualify for a Blue Light Card with access to a huge array of discounts.
If you would like to discuss the role in further detail or if you have any questions regarding your application please do not hesitate to contact the Human Resources team on 01424 457970 or email recruitment@stmichaelshospice.com
Please note CVs will not be accepted, unless candidates are unable to complete the application form due to a disability, in which case please contact the HR team.
Please note if a vacancy is part time the salary will be pro rata.
