Neway International are seeking a Senior Practitioner (Children’s Services) to join our client based with Thurrock Council.

Location: Civic Offices, New Road, Grays, Essex, RM17 6SL
Hours: 37 hours per week (2 days office‑based, 3 days remote)
Start Date: 23/03/2026
End Date: 26‑week assignment
Pay Rate: £24.48 PAYE / £32.66 Umbrella
IR35 Status: Inside IR35

About the Client
Thurrock Council’s Children’s Services directorate delivers early help, prevention, and statutory support to children, young people, and families. The Prevention and Support Service (PASS) provides integrated, multi‑disciplinary support designed to prevent escalation into statutory social care. PASS operates a “team around the family” model, bringing together social workers, senior practitioners, family support workers, youth workers, and outreach teams.

The Role
The Senior Practitioner will work within the Prevention and Support Service (PASS), supporting children and families to prevent escalation into statutory intervention. The role involves managing a varied caseload, providing consultation and specialist advice, delivering direct interventions, and ensuring high‑quality assessments and safeguarding practice. The post holder will also supervise less experienced or unqualified workers and may deputise for the Team Manager when required.

Key Responsibilities
Provide direct support, intervention, and consultation to children, young people, and families.

Prevent escalation into statutory social care through early help and targeted support.

Manage a varied caseload and maintain a strong focus on the child’s lived experience.

Deliver high‑quality assessments and take appropriate safeguarding action when required.

Supervise and support less experienced or unqualified staff.

Work collaboratively within a multi‑disciplinary team around the family.

Offer specialist advice on issues including parental separation, domestic abuse, mental health, and substance misuse.

Promote and comply with legislation, statutory guidance, and local policies.

Deputise for the Team Manager as needed.

Candidate Requirements
Qualified Social Worker with a Social Work degree.

Completion of ASYE.

Minimum 2 years’ post‑qualifying experience, ideally within Children’s Services.

Extensive experience of direct work with children and families requiring support or intervention.

Strong engagement skills and ability to work with families facing complex challenges.

Solid understanding of safeguarding, risk, and child‑centred practice.

Experience supporting families affected by domestic abuse, parental conflict, mental ill health, and substance misuse.

Ability to supervise and support junior staff.

Enhanced DBS (Children’s) required.
