A Vacancy at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.


The post holder will be part of a team providing a Metabolic Clinical Biochemistry service to the Trust and South-West region. The post holder will work within the Metabolic, Neuroendocrine and Nutrition laboratory, predominantly within the specialist enzymes section, playing a critical role in the screening, diagnosis and monitoring of patients with lysosomal storage disorders by undertaking complex diagnostic tests.

Team working and communication skills are essential to this role, and the post holder will work directly with a range of both clinical and technical staff.

The post holder will be expected to understand the need for analytical quality and clinical urgency, taking appropriate action when finding abnormal results in order to maintain the highest standards of patient care.

In addition to their analytical skills, the post holder will be expected to supervise and train other technical and scientific staff as directed by the section senior.

The post holder will be expected to be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and have UK based laboratory experience.

The post holder will have a normal working pattern of Monday - Friday 09:00 - 17:30, working 37.5 hours per week.
• To follow protocols for performing a wide range of laboratory procedures, and maintain accurate records in relation to laboratory activities within the Metabolic, Neuroendocrine and Nutrition laboratory.
• To organise personal workload in response to the urgency and volume of requests.
• To inspect analytical quality control results and authorise the reporting of only those analytical results which satisfy established criteria.
• To recognise the importance of abnormal results, and to ensure that they are reported without delay. To ensure that appropriate follow-on tests are performed in line with the level of abnormality detected.
• To maintain equipment and workspace in a clean and functional condition.
• To accurately follow SOPs in a safe and precise manner.
• To ensure that analytical procedures and equipment not conforming to quality specifications are brought to the attention of the senior staff member
• To supervise Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants and assist in training all other grades of staff including Clinical staff.
• Liaising with Metabolic Clinical Scientists and other service users.
• Liaising with various staff groups to give an overview of the tests performed in the section and engage with third party reps that supply goods or services to the section.
• To establish, maintain and increase their knowledge, skills and competency. This includes maintaining a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio.
