Make a difference – become a School Governor

Governors have an important part to play in helping schools to run effectively. They work as part of a team with the Headteacher and school staff to help provide a happy, safe and thriving learning environment and an excellent education for all the children. This voluntary role can be challenging yet extremely rewarding and is a great way to build on your personal and professional skills. You will be supported in the role through a programme of training and mentoring allowing you to use your insight and experience to the full extent.

Who are we?
East Reading Federation is comprised of two primary schools in East Reading. Our schools share a common set of co-operative values and our ethos is to enable children to be confident, able to meet future challenges, responsible members of the community and effective learners.

What will you do?
You will work with the federation governing board to develop the school’s vision and priorities, review educational performance and make strategic decisions.

Governor meetings are held regularly and may be combined with school visits focused on school priorities. You may also visit for specific events to understand how the school operates and experience school life. You will receive reports from the headteacher and senior leaders including phase leads and need to be able to question, challenge and support decisions.

What will be expected of you?

To attend meetings which are usually held in person on a Tuesday from 16:00-18:00, these would include one or two full governing boards each term and membership of at least one committee with a meeting each term. In addition to this there are normally one or two all-day meetings.
To be willing to attend other meetings which may include Pay Committee, Head Teacher Performance Management and very occasionally Complaints/Grievance/ Disciplinary hearings which will normally be face to face during the day.
To agree to the Governors Code of Conduct which includes: maintaining confidentiality, The 7 Nolan principles of public life, being open and transparent about any potential conflicts of interest. This includes having your name and attendance of meetings published on the school website.
To commit to attend training, this is mainly via teams in the evenings apart from new governors’ induction which is face to face for one day.
To visit the school, taking part in tours and engaging with staff and pupils.
To undertake a DBS and eligibility check, this is standard for all governors.

What are we looking for?
We need enthusiastic and committed people from a variety of backgrounds who care about supporting the success of the next generation so that they receive the best possible start to their education. You do not need leadership or education experience; just a desire to give back to the community and a proactive approach to becoming involved as a member of a team.

We would be delighted to hear from you if you have:

A keen interest in improving education for children
An open and enquiring mind
Business or financial experience as well as human resources experience
The ability to look at issues objectively
The confidence to ask questions
A willingness to listen and make informed judgements
