Crynodeb

We are seeking a calm, creative, and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to join an Alternative Provision (AP) setting in Exeter, Devon.
This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to support children and young people who have experienced barriers to learning, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), social and emotional needs, or sensory processing differences.

You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team - including teachers, behaviour specialists, and therapists - to provide individualised, therapeutic support that helps students engage positively in their education and develop essential life skills.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide consistent one-to-one and small-group support to students with Autism, ADHD, SEMH, or communication needs in an Alternative Provision environment.
- Use therapeutic and sensory-based strategies to support emotional regulation and engagement in learning.
- Implement communication systems such as PECS, Makaton, and visual supports to enhance understanding and participation.
- Collaborate with therapists and teaching staff to create safe, structured, and stimulating spaces that meet individual sensory and behavioural needs.
- Support the delivery of personalised education programmes and Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Encourage independence, confidence, and social interaction through positive reinforcement and adaptive learning.
- Promote a trauma-informed approach, maintaining patience, empathy, and consistency at all times.

About You

We are looking for an individual who thrives in a nurturing yet dynamic environment and is passionate about supporting learners who require a more tailored educational approach.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience working in Alternative Provision, SEN, or therapeutic education environments.
- A strong understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), sensory regulation, and behaviour as communication.
- Familiarity with de-escalation and behaviour support models such as Team Teach, PMVA, or MAPA.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, restorative approaches, and positive reinforcement.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and observation skills.
- A compassionate, reflective, and proactive attitude.

Relevant qualifications in education, psychology, or health and social care are welcomed, though a genuine commitment to inclusion and child-centred practice is essential.

Desirable Skills
- Experience implementing structured teaching methods such as TEACCH or SCERTS.
- Knowledge of sensory integration and the use of calming spaces or sensory circuits.
- Understanding of EHCP processes and evidence-based intervention planning.
- Experience working with speech and language therapists or occupational therapists.
- A confident, consistent approach to supporting pupils with challenging behaviour.

What We Offer

This role provides an opportunity to be part of a compassionate and skilled team within a supportive AP setting that values holistic development as much as academic progress.

You will benefit from:
- £19.05 per hour pay rate.
- Full-time hours aligned with the school calendar.
- Ongoing training including Team Teach, safeguarding, Autism awareness, and therapeutic practice modules.
- Opportunities to work closely with specialists in education, behaviour, and therapy.
- A strong culture of staff wellbeing, supervision, and professional growth.
- The chance to see tangible progress in learners who have previously disengaged from mainstream education.

Why Join an Alternative Provision Setting?

Working within an AP is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
You will be part of a team that helps children rediscover their confidence, rebuild trust in learning, and develop communication and coping strategies that support their long-term success.

Every day brings new opportunities to make a measurable difference - whether it's helping a student complete their first full lesson, manage a difficult transition, or find joy in a new subject.
