BSL Teaching Assistant (Level 2/3) - Manchester - Step Teachers
Step Teachers Manchester is recruiting Level 2 or 3 BSL Teaching Assistants for primary hearing impairment units embedded within mainstream primary schools in south Manchester.
Role: BSL Teaching Assistant - Hearing Impairment Unit (Primary)
Location: South Manchester (within mainstream primary school)
Start: September 2025.
Contract: Short term, long term & temp-to-perm placements.
Hours: Standard primary hours (typically ~8:30 am-3:30 pm)
Pay: up to £110/day DOE.
Paid PAYE directly via Step Teachers-no umbrella companies!
Receive same pay as perm staff in same role from 13th week onwards.
Easily accessible by public transport or car; parking varies by site

What You'll Do
- Support small groups of primary-aged pupils with significant hearing impairment in integrated units within mainstream schools
- Communicate using BSL to support learning and social engagement
- Adapt activities to meet individual communication and access needs
- Promote independence, confidence, and emotional wellbeing
- Collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, and sensory support staff to deliver inclusive education
About the Setting
- The hearing impairment units are based within mainstream primary schools, offering specialist support for children with hearing needs.
- These units provide tailored communication support, enabling children with hearing impairments to access mainstream education effectively.
- Supports children from early years up to 19 and works closely with schools to enhance educational achievement, communication skills, independence, and social and emotional confidence.
Ideal Candidate
- Holds a Level 2 or 3 BSL qualification (or equivalent).
- Experienced in working with primary-aged children with hearing impairment.
- Skilled in BSL communication, adaptation of activities, and inclusive practice.
- Prior experience working in a school or education setting.
- Flexible, patient, and adept at building relationships with pupils, staff, and families.
