Purchasing Manager, West Bromwich, £35-40k

My client is an established and successful manufacturing company. They produce high-quality, bespoke products for a wide range of customers. They are looking to strengthen their procurement function with the appointment of an experienced and proactive Buyer / Purchasing Manager.
You will be responsible for managing all company purchasing activities, ensuring that materials, components, and consumables are procured efficiently, cost-effectively, and to the correct specification. Working closely with contract engineers, the production team, and suppliers, you will play a critical role in ensuring our production schedules are met by procuring the right materials at the right time.

This is a hands-on role based in the production office, allowing for a highly reactive and responsive purchasing function, especially when urgent or short-lead-time orders are required.

Key Responsibilities: -
• Take ownership of the end-to-end procurement process for all materials and consumables across the company.
• Receive and interpret Bills of Materials (BOMs) from Contract Engineers and initiate purchase orders accordingly.
• Source materials from approved and alternative suppliers to ensure best value and delivery to specification.
• Negotiate with suppliers to achieve the best pricing, lead times, and terms while maintaining strong, professional relationships.
• Use commercial judgement to decide on bulk-buying opportunities versus project-specific purchasing.
• Monitor outstanding orders and proactively chase suppliers to ensure timely deliveries, escalating issues where necessary.
• Collaborate with stores and production teams to manage incoming deliveries and resolve delivery discrepancies.
• Issue completed BOMs to the relevant audience as confirmation that all required materials have been ordered.
• Assist in monthly stock takes, ensuring data accuracy and helping to identify trends in stock usage.
• Identify and recommend opportunities for cost savings and process improvements within the purchasing function.
• Maintain accurate purchasing records, price logs, and supplier performance data.

Requirements: -
• The successful candidate will have proven experience in a similar Purchasing / Buying role gained within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
• Strong knowledge of procurement best practices, particularly within a project-driven, job-specific manufacturing setting.
• Excellent negotiation skills and commercial acumen.
• Experience purchasing engineering materials such as steel plate, tube, flanges, profiles, joint sets, and other components.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including Bills of Materials and engineering drawings.
• Highly organised with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where urgent, reactive orders are common.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and purchasing and SAGE systems.
• An understanding of quality control requirements and material traceability would be beneficial.
• Familiarity with ISO9001 or similar quality systems would also be advantageous.

We are unable to accept or process applications from candidates who are currently living outside of the United Kingdom.

VISA Sponsorship: The client is unable to provide VISA sponsorship (now or in the future) and therefore cannot employ anyone who does not have full leave to remain and work in the UK. During the recruitment process you will be asked to provide evidence of your Right to Work in the UK.
