Our charity’s vision for 2027 is ‘to transform our historic building and spaces into inspirational contemporary places that enable our community to thrive.’ Strengthening our relationship with volunteers is critical to achieving our ambitions in the next three years.
This is where you come in. The perfect person for this job will bring new ideas to keep us fresh, keep us exciting and keep us relevant in our community. They will also be great at bringing people together around a common cause, in spotting what makes a person uniquely brilliant, and in giving people the confidence to develop new skills or show off old ones.
Typical duties of the role:
-Be the strategic lead for developing our volunteer programme
-Act as the main point of contact for all volunteer enquiries
-Empower individuals and groups to do more at the centre – to deliver work, get involved and feel connected to what happens here.
-Develop and maintain strong relationships with lead volunteers running activities across our Sub Groups (Gregson Festival Group, Highfield and Friends of Miss Whalley’s Field), Volunteer led programmes across the centre (currently about 10, ranging from Cancer Support Group – Brew & Banter to Expert Hour)
-Lead on volunteer recruitment, prioritising quieter voices, socially isolated and marginalised individuals find a place here
-Work with Gregson office and Cafe Bar staff to identify where volunteer roles will support the organisation and develop our community and creative ambitions
-Support volunteers and staff who manage volunteers across the organisation to ensure volunteering is enjoyable and mutually beneficial. In this role you will work closely with our Deputy Cafe Bar Manager to ensure volunteering in the cafe bar is working effectively.
-Lead the application, selection and interview process for new and returning volunteers.
-Lead volunteer inductions, ongoing management and development including regular supervision meetings with individuals and groups of volunteers (our volunteer hubs, sub groups and volunteer led programming groups.)
-Maintain volunteer records and databases
-Lead on evaluation of volunteer programmes and the volunteering offer at the Gregson – produce short reports for the Board and for funders as required.
-Ensure volunteering policies and procedures are reviewed to reflect best practice.
-Ensure safeguarding practices and volunteer safety is prioritised within a busy working environment.
-Celebrate our volunteer’s achievements – make sure everyone is thanked for taking part and make sure our volunteers are celebrated more widely in the community – for example nominating volunteers for awards.
-The classic… Any other duties as reasonably required! .
The essential requirements include:
-Good people management skills and experience of managing and coordinating volunteers.
-Experience of running or supporting volunteer recruitment.
-Person centred skills that can facilitate volunteer development.
-A background in developing relationships with other organisations and professional bodies.
-Experienced in adhering to safeguarding practices.
-Understanding of the law (Equalities Act) and commitment to equal opportunities and inclusion.
-Experience of working directly with socially excluded individuals.
-Flexibility to work when required outside Mon-Fri 9-5.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team of people associated with the Gregson.
-A commitment to the vision and values of the Gregson.
Although not essential, it would also be great if you have:
-Involvement in or management of monitoring systems to ensure inclusion (targeting and enabling accessibility to underrepresented groups.)
-Experience of supporting people with additional needs or who experience social inequalities to volunteer including those with different learning abilities.
-Experience of fundraising within the third sector.
-Knowledge of Lancaster & Morecambe district.
-First Aid certificate, driving licence and safeguarding training (not essential)
-Experience of supporting volunteers through supervision, recognition and feedback.
-Experience and knowledge to develop and review volunteering policy and practices.
-Experience/awareness of professional bodies related to volunteering e.g. NCVO.
