Can you work effectively independently as well as part of a team?

Have you got experience of working within an administrative function?

Do you want an opportunity to build an understanding of corporate finance and to learn more about using private investment to achieve government’s aims?

If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The Corporate Finance Advisory (CFA) Team advises the Department for Transport (DfT) on commercial and funding strategies related to some of the UK’s most important transport projects and initiatives. We are a well-established, highly skilled and widely respected team of Corporate Finance professionals with backgrounds across the private and public sector. We are looking for a Business and PFI Administration colleague to join our collaborative, diverse and inclusive team.

In this role, you will split your time between providing general business support to the CFA team and specific project support for the DfT Private Finance Initiative (PFI) portfolio. The former will include team administration duties related to recruitment, finance and purchasing, information management and meeting organisation / coordination. The latter includes opportunities to support advice and management on specific PFI projects. The DfT PFI portfolio includes over 50 infrastructure projects that were developed using private finance arrangements, in which the private sector finances initial capital costs and then receives payments over a 25+ year contract related to the infrastructure. They mainly relate to roads and streetlighting infrastructure.

This role would suit a candidate who has strengths in administration duties but is also looking for an opportunity to develop wider commercial and/or financial experience.

Your specific responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Providing business and administration support for the team, including to the team’s three Deputy Directors (e.g. managing diaries, organising meetings and booking rooms).
  • Providing wider business support, including in relation to (i) recruitment (ii) act as joint Information Technology Focal Point and Security Liaison Officer (iii) information management, (iv) finance and purchasing e.g. helping purchase training / venues (v) coordination of official correspondence and (vi) organising and coordinating team meetings.
  • Contributing to the overall performance and capability of the team and facilitate team working. This would include owning and updating the team resource tracker, ensuring this is updated by the team every month.
  • Supporting and organising the annual DfT Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Local Authority Networking Event, and other working groups and events across the PFI Portfolio. This would include liaising and negotiating with external venues, securing budgets from within the Directorate, booking catering and helping to draft/ agree the agenda.
  • Coordinating the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) Annual Data Collection from PFI contracting authorities. Ensuring data is complete, analyse returns and present findings to the Deputy Director.
  • Helping to manage issues that come up on specific PFI projects in the portfolio. This could include administration related to variations in contracts, providing advice on disputes that occur between the public and private sector, and supporting a programme of activities around the expiry of these contracts.

For further information on the role, please read the Role Profile. Please note that the role profile is for information purposes only - whilst all elements are relevant to the role, they may not all be assessed during the recruitment process. This job advert will detail exactly what will be assessed during the recruitment process.
