Job Title: Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant
Location: LS9, Leeds
Start Date: 1st July 2025
Hours: 8:30 AM 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday (term-time only)
Pay: GBP95 - GBP105 per day (depending on experience and qualifications)
Contract Type: Temporary (with the potential to become permanent)

About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant to join a nurturing and dynamic special needs school in the LS9 area of Leeds. This setting supports children and young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated learning difficulties, sensory processing needs, and communication challenges.

In this role, you will provide 1:1 and group support tailored to pupils with autism, helping them access the curriculum and thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. You will be working closely with classroom teachers, therapists, and the SEN team to provide consistency, structure, and a safe learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Deliver targeted support to students with autism, adapting your approach to meet individual sensory, behavioural, and communication needs.

Support students using structured systems such as PECS, Makaton, TEACCH, or visual schedules.

Assist with daily routines and transitions, helping reduce anxiety and promote independence.

Foster strong, trusting relationships with pupils to build confidence and encourage engagement.

Implement and follow behaviour support plans under the guidance of the SENCO or external specialists.

Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to deliver differentiated and inclusive learning.

Provide personal care support if required (training will be provided).

Maintain accurate records of student progress and incidents where appropriate.

Ensure all safeguarding policies are followed and that the welfare of pupils is always prioritised.

Requirements:
Experience supporting children or young people with autism is essential.

Familiarity with autism-specific strategies and tools (e.g. , PECS, Makaton, TEACCH, Social Stories).

A calm, patient, and nurturing approach.

Ability to remain consistent and resilient in a challenging but rewarding environment.

Excellent communication skills with both pupils and colleagues.

A relevant qualification (e.g. , CACHE Level 2/3, Autism Awareness training) is beneficial.

Enhanced DBS on the update service or willingness to obtain one (assistance provided).
