Crynodeb

The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering is a world-leader in research, whose main interests lie in: Ship Design, Stability and Safety, Marine Hydrodynamics, Marine Structures, Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering, Emerging Technologies, Offshore Renewable Energy and Alternative Fuels. The Department makes a significant contribution to National, European and International policy-making in Marine Technology research and its application.
AI-PASSPORT is an innovative UK-South Korea project to enhance maritime logistics by reducing costs and emissions through an AI-integrated digital platform. It features two main modules: the Efficient Operation package (led by Korea), which optimises port calls, ship scheduling, and environmental assessments, and the Safe Autonomous package (led by the UK), which uses AI for image sensing and autonomous ship navigation. The platform supports real-time data integration, security, and predictive analytics, aiming to set new global standards in maritime efficiency, safety, and sustainability, with a clear path for commercialisation.
As a Research Associate, you will contribute to the delivery of the research activities as part of a team, working under the general supervision of senior colleagues. You will manage and prioritise your own workload and ensure that all activities are completed before deadlines and you will write up the results of your research and contribute to the production of research reports and publications. You will input as a team member to administrative activities and assist, where required, with relevant teaching and knowledge exchange activities. You will contribute in a developing capacity to Department, Faculty and/or University administrative and management functions and committees and engage in continuous professional development.
To be considered for the role, applicants must possess a PhD or equivalent qualification in Marine Engineering or a closely related discipline. Alternatively, candidates with relevant professional experience, combined with a pertinent degree in a related field, are strongly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of system safety, reliability, and autonomous technologies, showcasing the ability to contribute meaningfully to research and innovation in these areas.
Applicants should exhibit a developing capacity for independent research, with a track record of disseminating results through high-quality publications or presentations. The ability to contribute to the preparation and submission of research proposals, particularly those aimed at securing external funding, will be essential. A demonstrated aptitude for collaboration, both within multidisciplinary teams and with industry partners, is highly valued.
In addition, candidates with practical marine engineering experience, such as time spent in sea-going roles or involvement with ship operations and maintenance, will be highly regarded. Such experience provides valuable insights into the practical challenges and applications of marine engineering and is considered a significant asset for advancing research that bridges theoretical knowledge and real-world practice.
You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.
Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with experience of relevant student supervision and teaching activities, and/or experience of knowledge exchange related activities.
