Summary

Clinical To actively promote and maintain effective communication and information sharing strategies in relation to safeguarding children and young people. To support and empower practitioners within the Trust to identify safeguarding children issues, ultimately enabling them to manage concerns appropriately. To work in partnership with lead clinicians, heads of service and matrons to ensure that frontline staff are aware of their responsibilities to ensure that children are effectively safeguarded. The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the Trusts internal management reviews in response to requests from the Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships where a child dies or sustains a serious injury thought to be as a result of abuse or neglect; and will ensure that the reports are submitted for sign off by the Director of Nursing and Quality prior to submission to the Local Safeguarding Children Partnership. To have a sound knowledge of the complex issues related to safeguarding children and young people which will include domestic abuse, parental mental health and drug and substance misuse. Demonstrate excellent communication skills in written, verbal and presentation skills within a variety of forums. To demonstrate the ability to manage an unpredictable, challenging and changing workload. Leadership Act as an innovative, enthusiastic role model providing leadership, in depth specialist clinical knowledge, guidance and advice to staff on operational and professional issues in relation to safeguarding children, safeguarding supervision and domestic abuse, promoting an open, honest and transparent culture. Act as a resource for health care professionals by being visible, available, and accessible (when possible i.e. not out of hours) for support and advice in relation to the management of safeguarding and domestic abuse issues. Undertake safeguarding supervision of Midwives, Nurses and other colleagues and facilitate safeguarding supervision sessions on an individual or group basis. Contribute to the population of the Safeguarding Supervision Database. Reflect, analyse and take any identified action required in respect of complex child protection cases to ensure that children are safeguarded. Provide a professional link for other practitioners and actively promote joined up multi agency working. Lead consultations on and develop strategies for delivering effective care within a changing environment that improves the quality of care and health outcomes for vulnerable families. To have an awareness of and support the development of the child death review process within the local Health Economy. To have a detailed understanding of Government agendas in relation to safeguarding children and domestic abuse and alert the Trust to any issues in their implementation. Ensure systems are in place for risk assessment and harm minimisation including promoting fair & just culture in order that near misses and incidents are reported. Take the lead in investigation of incidents / complaints in relation to safeguarding children issues when required. Liaise with the Named Professionals for Safeguarding Adults and Lead for Learning disabilities regarding interfaces with vulnerable adults domestic abuse/Learning disabilities issues and incidents. Work with Named Professional for Safeguarding Adults to jointly lead the work on Domestic Homicide Reviews. Lead on areas identified in conjunction with Trust Objectives and Head of Safeguarding requirements. Demonstrate clinical leadership and challenge speciality and directorate boundaries to ensure that children and young people are effectively safeguarded throughout the organisation. Take a lead on policy writing and review ensuring that safeguarding is explicit in appropriate policies. To be aware of and demonstrate an ability to manage the emotional impact that individual cases of child abuse and neglect may have on practitioners through the provision of support and safeguarding supervision. To have an overview and understanding of the broader childrens agenda, local, regional and nationally.
