We are looking for a talented Senior Development Management (DM) Officer who has the drive and ambition to help us deliver an excellent service with an aim to be the leading Development Management service in Hertfordshire, alongside a true desire to shape and improve the borough. Hertsmere lies within southern Hertfordshire bordering the northern edge of Greater London. We have a unique combination of economic opportunities alongside a diverse townscape, villages and extensive areas of green belt land, meaning the borough provides an exciting opportunity to experience every aspect of the planning system.
Hertsmere is in the process of preparing a positive vision for growth within the borough through our new Local Plan. We are also working to provide a Joint Strategic Plan for the area and striving to deliver a quality focused Development Management service which meets the needs of existing and future residents. Our Development Management service is currently working on a variety of interesting and exciting projects including proposals relating to Sky Studios, Watford Football Club and the BBC. We are also due to commence in-putting on an emerging and interesting range of projects on Council owned sites.
Our own offices benefit from being close to both the A1 (M) and M25 whilst Elstree and Borehamwood Station lies within Zone 6 and provides a direct rail link to London St Pancras.
About the role
You will have shared responsibility for all aspects of development management processes inclusive of having your own caseload, often dealing with more complex planning issues including pre-application and appeal work as required. You will also be expected to assist and guide more junior members of the team as well as provide support to management staff.
About you
You will have a good knowledge of planning related legislation. You will be a strong team player who can contribute positively to the team and be able to demonstrate initiative and good judgement in making recommendations on a wide range of planning matters.
You are capable of developing good working relationships with a range of stakeholders, including the need to respond sensitively to the needs of the community and to deliver a service around the needs of our customers.

The post is offered on a full time, fixed-term basis for 2 years (36 hours per week).
Benefits include 26 – 31 days annual leave (depending on the length of Local Government Service), plus one floating day per annum, local government pension scheme, flexible working hours (including the opportunity to take up to 2 days flexi leave per month), free car parking, free use of leisure facilities, cycle hire scheme and season ticket loans. The Council operates a hybrid working system where employees may work two days per week from home.
