Job Profile

The post holder will be a locum Trauma and Orthopaedic consultant with a subspeciality interest in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.

The programme will contain a mixture of outpatient clinics (elective, DDH, CTEV, neuromuscular, fracture), theatres (elective, trauma) and potential on-call commitments.

• It is essential that the successful candidate can demonstrate advanced training and experience in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.

• The successful candidate will need to work closely with the current Consultant Orthopaedics Surgeons and multi-disciplinary team within the department and also with colleagues across the Trust and region

• Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

• To share with colleagues the responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Services and patients.

• Teaching and training of Junior Staff and Medical Students.

• To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.

• To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional Development (CPD).


Duties and responsibilities
• To be competent in history taking and examination.
• Know how to be able to manage the acutely ill patient.
• To be competent in communication skills with colleagues, staff and patients as well as documentation.
• To be able to work as a member of a team and with other teams in a multi-disciplinary setting.
• To be able to show professionalism during the delivery of the role that will support and enable good clinical care.
• To be competent in the area of decision making and prioritising one’s workload as well as demonstrating effective time management.

Job Plan

The job plan on appointment will consist of a split of 3.5:0.5 DCC/SPA. The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through ad personal agreement). Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Following appointment, non-core SPA may be used to participate in our consultant development programme, or in acquiring or consolidating specific skills and expertise. Non-core SPA is only available if specific activities and objectives are mutually agreed in job planning.
