About us

UCL is a radically different university. Founded in 1826 in the heart of London, we were the first university in England to welcome students of any religion and the first to welcome women to university education. Today UCL has over 50,000 students and more than 18,000 staff and is one of the world's top universities. We are ranked second in the UK for research power and first in London (REF 2021).

Campus Infrastructure & Experience (CI&E) plays a central role in supporting UCL's extensive estate, ensuring that critical infrastructure and building services operate safely and effectively across a large and complex environment.

About the role

We are looking for a Maintenance and Operations Supervisor to join our Estates Maintenance Operations team in a shift-based role, based onsite in Bloomsbury.

This is a hands-on supervisory role where you will lead a team of maintenance operatives delivering planned and reactive maintenance across building services, systems, infrastructure, plant and equipment. Alongside supervising the team, you will remain technically involved, supporting fault finding, diagnosis and resolution of issues as they arise.

You will plan, prioritise and allocate work to ensure that maintenance activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with operational priorities. The role involves coordinating activity across a busy estate, working closely with other supervisors, helpdesk teams and contractors, and taking the lead during incidents or service disruptions.

You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of health and safety, including the preparation and review of risk assessments and permits to work, and ensuring compliance with all statutory and internal procedures. You will also monitor performance, contribute to reporting and planning activities, and support the ongoing development of your team.

Shift pattern and salary

This role operates on a 12-hour shift pattern (11 hours paid with a 1-hour unpaid break), following a rotating cycle of:

4 days on, 4 days off, 4 nights on, 4 days off

This pattern repeats on an ongoing basis and includes weekends and public holidays as part of the normal working schedule.

The base salary for this role is £43,981 - £52,586, plus a 15% shift allowance.
This equates to a total salary range of approximately £49,798 - £59,694 per annum (inclusive of shift allowance).

Recruitment process

Our recruitment process will take place over two stages.

The initial stage will be a short call with a member of the team to discuss your technical experience and suitability for the role. These conversations are planned for the week commencing 11 May.

Candidates who are successful at this stage will be invited to attend an in-person interview, scheduled for the week commencing 18 May.

About you

You will have a recognised trade qualification in a mechanical or electrical discipline, supported by significant experience in operational maintenance within a complex environment.

You will bring experience of supervising or managing teams, with the ability to organise workloads, manage performance and respond effectively to day-to-day operational challenges. You are comfortable making decisions in a fast-paced environment, particularly where priorities may shift or incidents arise.

You will have strong technical knowledge of building services and be confident in fault finding and diagnosing issues using a range of tools, systems and documentation. A strong understanding of health and safety legislation and safe working practices is essential.

You will also bring strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues, contractors and building users. You maintain a calm, professional approach, particularly when dealing with incidents or high-pressure situations, and are committed to delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service.

What we offer

As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

  • 19.7 days annual leave (based on 11-hour shifts), equivalent to 28 days per annum pro rata, with additional leave arrangements aligned to the shift pattern

  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • On-Site nursery
  • On-site gym
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
  • Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
