Job summary





Bhuku Ltd is recruiting a Literacy & Numeracy Support Tutor to deliver a high-impact programme at HMP Holme House.



This role focuses on supporting prisoners with low or no literacy and numeracy skills, helping them develop confidence, independence and the ability to engage in education, employment and daily life.



You will deliver a whole-prison approach, working across wings, workshops, classrooms and the library to promote reading, develop numeracy skills and provide targeted interventions.








Job description





You will deliver a structured programme that supports learners to:



Improve literacy and basic numeracy skills
Build confidence, independence and self-esteem
Develop reading for pleasure and engagement in learning
Access further education and training opportunities
Strengthen skills needed for employment and resettlement




You will also:



Deliver literacy and numeracy clubs, workshops and 1:1 support
Manage a caseload of up to 25 learners, prioritising those with the lowest skill levels
Promote and support the prison’s Reading Strategy
Develop and deliver in-cell learning materials
Train and support peer mentors (e.g. Shannon Trust model)
Track learner progress and maintain records, including referrals into education
Contribute to monthly reporting, attendance data and learner feedback
Deliver staff awareness sessions to promote literacy and numeracy across the prison




Delivery will take place across multiple areas of the prison, requiring flexibility and strong collaboration.








Working pattern





Monday to Thursday: 08:00 – 16:15
Friday: 08:00 – 12:00
12-month fixed-term contract
Delivery aligned to prison regime times (including morning and afternoon sessions)









Person specification







Essential





Experience delivering literacy, numeracy or functional skills support
Strong communication and facilitation skills
Ability to engage learners with low confidence and complex needs
Ability to work within a secure environment and follow procedures
Willingness to complete prison vetting and induction









Desirable





Experience working in a custodial or secure setting
Teaching, training or coaching qualification
Experience supporting neurodiverse learners or those with additional needs
Experience working with peer mentors or reading support programmes









Skills and experience





You will be:



Confident delivering 1:1 and group-based support
Skilled in engaging learners who may be disengaged from education
Able to promote a positive culture of reading and learning
Organised and able to manage caseloads and learner tracking
Professional, resilient and adaptable in a secure environment









Additional information





This role is based in a Category B local prison with a complex and diverse population

All staff must:



Pass security vetting
Complete HMPPS induction and training
Follow all prison policies and procedures
