Literacy & Numeracy Tutor (Prison-Based)

Hours: 24 hours per week (Monday – Wednesday)

About the Role
Bhuku Ltd is seeking a committed and adaptable Literacy & Numeracy Tutor to deliver an engaging, trauma-informed programme at HMP Stafford.
This role focuses on supporting learners with low levels of literacy and numeracy, helping them overcome barriers to education, employment and successful reintegration into society.
You will deliver a flexible, learner-centred programme, working both directly with learners and supporting the development of a peer-led learning culture within the prison.
What You’ll Be Delivering
You will deliver an informal literacy and numeracy programme designed to:
Improve reading, writing and basic maths skills
Support understanding of written communication within the prison
Enable engagement with key services (healthcare, family support, education)
Build confidence and motivation to progress into formal education
Support sentence planning, release preparation and employability
Delivery will be entry-level and non-accredited, with clear progression pathways into formal Prison Education Services (PES).
Key Responsibilities
Deliver 3 full days per week (Monday–Wednesday, AM & PM sessions)
Provide 1:1 and small group support tailored to individual learner needs
Create and deliver accessible learning materials (printed, visual, digital where appropriate)
Support and train peer mentors to assist with literacy and numeracy development
Facilitate book clubs and maths clubs across the establishment
Track learner progress and maintain records using prison systems
Contribute to monthly reporting, case studies and learner feedback
Work collaboratively with:
Learning & Skills Manager
Education providers (PES)
Library services
CIAG teams
Delivery Approach
Trauma-informed and inclusive
Adapted for neurodiverse learners and those with learning difficulties
Flexible delivery using:
Printed workbooks
Audio-visual materials
Digital platforms (where available)
Focused on building confidence and re-engaging learners in education
You will also support the development of a peer mentor network, helping sustain learning beyond formal sessions.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
Passionate about improving literacy and numeracy outcomes
Skilled at engaging learners who may have had negative prior experiences of education
Confident working in a secure and structured environment
Adaptable and able to deliver creative, accessible sessions
Organised and able to manage learner progress effectively
Essential Requirements
Experience delivering literacy, numeracy or functional skills support
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work within prison security and safeguarding procedures
Willingness to complete full prison vetting and induction
Ability to deliver both 1:1 and group-based learning
Desirable
Experience working in a custodial or secure environment
Teaching, training or coaching qualification
Experience supporting neurodiverse learners or those with additional needs
Experience developing or supporting peer mentoring programmes
