Neway International are seeking a Service Manager – Safeguarding to join our client Somerset Council.

Location: The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4DY
Hours: 37 per week
Start date: 20 April 2026
Duration: ongoing
Pay: PAYE £360.00 per day / Umbrella £494.75 per day
Work pattern: 1 day per week in the office (Wednesdays), with flexibility for occasional additional office days

About the Client
Somerset Council’s Adults Services & Housing directorate delivers statutory safeguarding, social work and operational support to adults across the county. The Safeguarding Service plays a critical role in ensuring adults at risk are protected, supported and empowered, working closely with partners across health, housing and community services.

The Role
The Service Manager – Safeguarding will provide strategic and operational leadership across the Adults Safeguarding function. You will oversee safeguarding activity, ensure high‑quality practice, manage risk, support operational teams and contribute to service development. This is a senior interim role requiring strong safeguarding expertise, confident decision‑making and experience managing complex operational services.

Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Adults Safeguarding Service, ensuring statutory compliance and high‑quality practice.

Provide professional oversight of safeguarding enquiries, risk management and decision‑making.

Support and guide operational managers and social work teams.

Oversee performance, quality assurance and service improvement activity.

Work collaboratively with internal and external partners, including health, police and voluntary sector agencies.

Ensure safeguarding processes, policies and procedures are followed consistently.

Contribute to strategic planning, service development and operational delivery.

Represent the service at internal and multi‑agency meetings.

Candidate Requirements
Essential:

Significant experience in adult safeguarding at a senior management level.

Strong understanding of statutory safeguarding duties, legislation and best practice.

Experience leading operational social work or safeguarding teams.

Proven ability to manage risk, make defensible decisions and oversee complex cases.

Excellent communication, leadership and partnership‑working skills.

Ability to work autonomously within a hybrid model.

Desirable:

Experience within a local authority safeguarding service.

Professional social work qualification and registration.

Additional Information
This is a senior interim role requiring on‑site presence every Wednesday, with flexibility for occasional additional office attendance. The successful candidate will join a high‑performing service during a period of continued development and operational demand.
