This job description sets out the details and service conditions for one Perioperative Medicine Fellow position in Anaesthetics, based at Homerton Healthcare.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a trainee with an interest in perioperative care to develop as a clinician. The post is designed to provide a wide range of perioperative experience for a trainee, including running a pre-operative assessment clinic and working with a range of specialities to continue to develop perioperative services within the Trust. There will also be the opportunity to attend appropriate regional and national events. It is anticipated that during this twelve month post the trainee will be able to amass the perioperative skills and competencies necessary for their specialist training.

The post will be split 60:40 between clinical and perioperative activities. Clinical duties will be within Anaesthesia with an anticipated:

· six months in general/obstetric anaesthesia (obstetric anaesthesia on-calls)

and

· six months in general/obstetric anaesthesia (obstetric OR general anaesthesia on-calls depending on service requirements)



The post can either be taken as a stand-alone role or as an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from a specialist training programme. For the latter, prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and the deanery.

Clinical Duties

The post is for one year at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. We would welcome applications from doctors who have previous experience in any of a wide range of specialties,though relevant experience in anaesthesia (beyond ST2 level) is required in order to function independently as a registrar out of hours.

Hours of work

This will be solely at the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, resident full shift. The appointee will be expected to make a full contribution to service provision in Anaesthesia. This is currently on a 1:7 or 1:8 basis for nights and long days and on a full shift pattern.



Night shifts

This will be solely at the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.



Additional duties of the post
• Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient Anaesthesia service.
• Provide evidence-based care when appropriate.
• Have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in national standards and the local commissioners’ contracts.

The post will be split 60/40 between clinical duties and perioperative care related activities, with the appointee taking part in departmental education. If the appointee is not contributing adequately to non-clinical activities (e.g. project work, research, service development, etc), then the non-clinical allocated time will be allocated to clinical duties.

The appointee will be expected, if required, to provide shop floor cover for speciality regional training days.

Learning and educational objectives:



In keeping with the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Stage 2 Level Curriculum, the post-holder will complete the following objectives during the fellowship:

· Deliver high quality preoperative assessment, investigation and management of patients presenting for elective and emergency surgery

· Deliver high quality individualised anaesthetic care to all patients, focusing on optimising patients experience and outcome.

· To plan and implement high quality individualised post-operative care for all patients.

· To take a leadership role in the multidisciplinary team in delivering perioperative care.
