Summary


This job description sets out the details and service conditions for a Research Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine, based at Homerton University Hospital.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a trainee with an interest in research to develop their skills and undertake practical research work in a clinical setting. The post is designed to provide a wide range of experience for trainees who wish to make a commitment to research as part of their career. Research is part of the long term strategy of the department. It is anticipated that during this post the trainee will be able to develop a majority of the skills and competencies necessary for their higher specialisttraining.

The post will be split 60:40 between Clinical and Research activities. The post can either be taken as a stand-alone role or as an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from a specialist training programme. Prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and the deanery.

· To undertake research projects that support the critical careservice

· To develop, implement and deliver innovative patientcare

· To liaise with the R&I Department and foster links with appropriate externalresources

· To support other members of staff in the department in the running of researchwork

The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is the main hospital for the London Borough of Hackney and is attached to the St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry (part of University of London).

The first patients were admitted in July 1986 and the hospital was officially opened on 10thMarch 1987 by HRH The Princess Royal. Until March 1994, Homerton Hospital formed part of the Bart’sNHSgroup of hospitals. From April 1994, it was established as a directly managed unit of East London and the City Health Authority (ELCHA) and became a trust in April1995.

The hospital was granted licence to operate as a foundation hospital on 31stMarch 2004. This has allowed the hospital certain freedoms to facilitate innovations in the way that services are developed and provided.

The hospital has approximately 500 beds at present.

Research responsibilities will include primarily departmental service development however there may be opportunities for working with other departments across the Trust depending on the project undertaken. The ICU Research Fellow will be responsible for supporting ongoing studies and developing projects within the Critical Care Service. There may also be opportunities to develop management skills and present work at conferences. This work will be supported by both senior medical and nursing staff within the department.
