Crynodeb
Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn't exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.
Campus Support (Security) is central to that. We operate around the clock, across a busy, open and welcoming estate. Our job is not just to keep people safe. It is to make sure everyone who comes through our doors feels respected, supported and at ease.
The Opportunity
This is a new role, created at an exciting moment in the development of our security service. We are investing in our people, our technology and our ways of working, and we need the right operational leader to help us drive that forward.
As Campus Security Operations Manager you will work closely with the Head of Campus Support (Security) to lead day-to-day operations across the university estate. You will be the person who sets the tone, holds the standards and makes sure the whole team is pulling in the same direction.
A key part of this role is your working relationship with the Security Systems Manager. They hold overall responsibility for the security technology estate. You are the operational lead for the teams who use it every day. That shared ground is where real improvement happens, and the two roles are designed to work in close partnership to develop systems, processes and procedures that work better for everyone.
But this is not a traditional security management role. A university campus is unlike almost any other environment. On any given shift your team might be supporting a student in crisis, welcoming guests to a major public event, managing a fire evacuation or helping someone find their way around. The range is enormous and the expectations are high.
What we need is a leader who genuinely values people. Someone who understands that how we make people feel is just as important as what we do. Someone who can build a team that is professional, compassionate and proud of the service they deliver.
What You Will Do
- Lead operational security across the university estate, ensuring a consistent, high quality and people-focused service around the clock.
- Manage, develop and motivate a team of supervisors, team leaders and campus support officers. You will set clear standards and supporting people to grow.
- Drive consistency across all shifts, so that the quality of service never depends on who is working.
- Oversee incident management and emergency response, ensuring every situation is handled with professionalism, care and clear documentation.
- Use performance data and operational audits to identify improvements and demonstrate service quality to stakeholders.
- Lead staff training and development, ensuring all team members are skilled, compliant and confident in their roles.
- Work in close partnership with the Security Systems Manager to develop and improve security systems, processes and procedures, ensuring technology and operational delivery are aligned.
- Ensure full compliance with SIA requirements, Health and Safety legislation and all relevant university policies.
- Assist in managing security budgets and monitoring contractor performance.
- Deputise for the Head of Campus Support (Security) when required.
- Participate in an on-call rota to provide senior leadership support for urgent incidents outside normal hours.
What We Are Looking For
We are open to applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds. You might come from security, the military, the police, the NHS, hospitality, higher education or somewhere else entirely. What matters to us is not your CV headline, it is your values, your leadership ability and your instinct for putting people first.
We will ask you to demonstrate:
- A track record of leading teams in complex, fast-paced, customer-focused environments.
- A leadership style that is calm, visible and consistent, one that earns respect and builds trust.
- A genuine belief that security and exceptional customer service are not in conflict. They go hand in hand.
- Experience managing incidents, emergencies and operational pressures with composure and good judgement.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to engage with students, staff and senior stakeholders.
- The ability to use data and insight to drive improvement rather than simply react to problems.
- An understanding of security legislation and compliance, including SIA requirements and Health and Safety regulations.
- Familiarity with security technology such as CCTV, access control and alarm systems.
- A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, not just as a policy obligation but as something you actively champion.
- Flexibility to work across multiple sites and participate in an on-call rota.
- A relevant degree or equivalent qualification, or demonstrable experience. A Health and Safety qualification such as IOSH Managing Safely is desirable, or willingness to work towards one.
In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.
This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.
If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.
LJMU values diversity and provides a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can fulfil their potential. Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
