We are seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic psychologist to work in the cancer and palliative care service based at the Homerton Hospital in Hackney. The role is part of a small team offering direct and indirect provision in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and will contribute to psychological thinking across the cancer pathway and workforce.

This post is suitable for those who are at – or ready to work at – band 8a level or for those who are newly qualified. If the appointee is newly qualified, they will be appointed at band 7 under a preceptorship process with a clear development plan outlining required competencies to achieve over a 12-18 month period for successful progression to Band 8a, with a review following the probation period at 6 months.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop clinical skills in this challenging but extremely fulfilling area of work. Homerton Hospital hosts a number of health and mental health services and there are growing opportunities for professional networking. There is a strong relationship with the local cancer centre psychology team at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, with well-established links for mutual support and shared learning.

To contribute alongside peers to the provision of a high quality, specialist cancer and palliative care psychology service (Cancer Psychological Services) at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. To contribute to an inpatient and outpatient assessment service, provision of psychological formulation / management recommendations, and appropriate interventions for those with psychological difficulties related to their cancer diagnosis or other life limiting disease. To provide a consultation, promote psychosocial knowledge and service development, as well asinter-agency working within the North East London Cancer Alliance.

To supervise and support the psychological assessment and therapy provided by other psychological practitioners and other clinical staff who provide psychologically based care and treatment.

To provideline management/supervisonof other qualified psychologists/student psychologists in liaison with the service lead.

The postholder will contribute to teaching programmes within Cancer Services, the Cancer Alliance, medical school, and clinical psychology training courses. As a major requirement of the job the postholder will carry out audit, policy and service development, and research and development (R&D). The postholder will further the practice of Clinical Psychology through the development and implementation of R&D programmes, evaluation, policy and service development, audit and clinical governance.

A. Clinical:

1. To provide expert knowledge and guidance regarding the psychological issues related to cancer and other mental and physical health conditions.

2. To provide highly developed specialist psychological assessments of patients referred to Cancer Psychological Services (CPS), based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological (and neuropsychological) tests, self-report measures, rating scales direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and other professionals involved in the patient’s care.

3. To formulate plans for psychological treatment and/or management, drawing upon an appropriate conceptual framework and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings. Adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

4. To make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.

5. To be responsible for implementing a range of evidence based psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups.

6. When necessary,provide crisis intervention forthose suffering severe psychological reactions.

7. To contribute across services to ensure that psychological interventions / management strategies contribute to a coherent and optimal package of care.

8. To exercise full responsibility and autonomy for the treatment and discharge of patients from CPS, ensuring appropriate assessment, formulation and interventions, communicating with the referral agent and others involved with the care on a regular basis.

9. To provide expertise and specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to patients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.

10. To ensure that all professionals within cancer services have access to a psychologically based framework for the understanding and care of patients of the service, through the provision of advice, consultation, supervision and the dissemination of psychological knowledge, research and theory.

11. To provide expertise and advice to MDTs to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care.

12. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for relevant individual patients and to provide both general and specialist advice on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.

13. To communicate in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of patients and to monitor and evaluate progress.

14. To provideexpert consultation beyond cancer services to the wider professional body within the Trust.

15. To work closely with the Specialist Palliative Care team and as required, contribute to the psychological service provided for patients (and their families) with non-malignant conditions.

16. To provide expert consultation about the psychological care to staff and agencies outside the Trust.

17. To work closely with other services providing psychological care in North East London to ensure that patients, families and other professionals experience a well co-ordinated and coherent clinical service.

18. To offer assessment, formulation and brief interventions to palliative care in patients and their significant others.

19. To offer consultation and recommendations to cancer and palliative care patients with a range of complex physical and mental health needs, and to their significant others and professionals.

20. Where clients are exhibiting risk, to develop a safety plan with the client and where necessary to liaise with relevant professionals or significant others.

B. Staff Development

21. effectively induct new staff into the Trust/department in accordance with the Trust’s induction programme.

22. facilitate the personal and professional development of staff. This involves identifying training and development needs, providing suitable development opportunities and evaluating development actions in accordance with the Trust’s appraisal and training procedures.

23. monitor the level and standard of work undertaken by your staff and to guide, coach and advise them as appropriate.

Research, Education & Training

24. Development of teaching programmes for CNS, support workers, resident doctors & clinical psychology trainees.

25. Working to develop teaching programmes for professionals, in collaboration with NELCA (NE London Cancer Alliance) psychologists and expert reference group.

26. Development & participation in clinical research programmes in collaboration with the research and development office.

D.Service Development

27. Carry out audits of patient interventions and patient experience to determine policy & strategic direction.

28. Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.

29. Report writing and presentation of strategic directions.
