Property Maintenance Operative (Level 2) – HMP Peterborough

Job Introduction

We are looking for a reliable and multi-skilled Property Maintenance Operative to support the upkeep and repair of facilities at HMP Peterborough. This role is key to ensuring a safe, secure, and well-maintained environment for both staff and prisoners.

You will carry out a mix of planned and reactive maintenance across a range of trades, contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of the site. Working within a secure environment, you will play an important role in maintaining standards, supporting compliance, and minimising disruption to operations.

Main Responsibilities
  • Carry out general maintenance and repair work across multiple trades (e.g. plumbing, carpentry, basic electrical)

  • Respond to reactive maintenance issues and complete planned preventative maintenance tasks

  • Ensure all work is completed in line with health, safety, and security procedures

  • Maintain accurate records of work completed using systems and tools provided

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, departments, and contractors on site

  • Participate in the on-call and weekend rota to provide out-of-hours support

The Ideal Candidate
  • Holds a Level 2 qualification in a relevant trade or has equivalent hands-on experience

  • Has experience in general property maintenance or a similar role

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of health and safety practices

  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Has good communication and problem-solving skills

  • Reliable, flexible, and able to work effectively in a secure and regulated environment

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced Level 2 and Advanced DBS check.

Package Description
  • Salary: £28,000 – £37,500 per annum (depending on experience)

  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

  • On-call rota and weekend working required
