HMP Peterborough – Male & Female Libraries
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Library & Learning Lead to strategically lead and deliver a comprehensive library and learning service across both the male and female libraries at HMP Peterborough.
This role is central to supporting literacy, educational achievement, and rehabilitation. You will foster a vibrant reading culture, deliver enrichment activities, and ensure residents receive tailored support that reflects their learning needs, cultural backgrounds, and rehabilitative goals.

Main Responsibilities
Lead the implementation of the prison’s library and reading strategy, promoting literacy and personal development for all residents.
Manage library provision across male and female education and wing areas, ensuring equitable access and culturally responsive collections.
Support literacy, research skills, and guided reading sessions, both individually and in groups.
Develop and deliver enrichment activities, including book clubs, storytelling, author visits, and creative writing sessions.
Collaborate with education, psychology, and welfare teams to provide tailored support for residents with additional needs.
Monitor library engagement, track outcomes, and prepare reports for senior leadership to demonstrate impact on learning, wellbeing, and rehabilitation.

The Ideal Candidate
Experience in literacy development, library services, or teaching, with a strong understanding of differentiated and inclusive learning approaches.
Qualified Teacher status, or willingness to work towards it.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to develop and manage enrichment programmes that engage diverse populations.
Confident and adaptable, able to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in a secure environment.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to monitor, report, and improve library and learning services.
Desirable:
Experience in custodial settings, working with both male and female populations, or holding a librarian qualification (Library Science, Archival Studies, etc.). Knowledge of rehabilitation-focused educational frameworks is an advantage.
Package Description
Salary: £30,801.47 per annum
Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday
