We value difference and diversity, because it helps us be more innovative and make better decisions. We are dedicated to being an inclusive employer, offering equitable opportunities for all individuals. Our goal is to build a diverse workforce, and we hope to attract applications from all backgrounds and underrepresented groups.

The Science Directorate (SD) delivers high quality, high impact and highly relevant multidisciplinary science. Our People are diverse, talented, engaged and inspired to deliver innovative outcomes.

The Surveillance Intelligence Unit (SIU) in APHA manages the veterinary scanning surveillance activities in England and Wales to quickly detect, characterise, and manage disease threats in animals.

This role is to provide professional administrative and secretarial support to the Surveillance Intelligence Unit (SIU). The post is part of the SIU Surveillance Management Team that contributes to the smooth running of the SIU and the development, implementation, and delivery of scanning surveillance by APHA and non-APHA partners in Great Britain.

The role is part-time, working 14.8 hours a week. There is flexibility on the working pattern, and this will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate.

We are recruiting a Surveillance Business Support administrator for the APHA Surveillance Intelligence Unit (SIU). The SIU team is responsible for delivering the animal disease scanning surveillance programme. This is exciting work which includes evaluation of potential threats to animal health and welfare, and to public health. A significant component of the data that inform potential threats are generated through the APHA’s network of Veterinary Investigation Centres (VICs) and externally contracted services. A full description of the scanning surveillance network is available at: http://apha.defra.gov.uk/vet-gateway/surveillance/index.htm

The role of the Surveillance Business Support Administrator is to support the contract and finance work within the SIU, including;

  • Provision of support to key administrative and business functions underpinning the smooth running of the SIU including processing procurement requests and invoice payments, and auditing requests and payments as required.
  • Drafting and editing reports/documents.
  • Organising documentation, ensuring papers are available for meetings prior to attendance, mindful of document version control and quality standards.
  • Monitoring of e-mails and calendars, as part of a team rota, and taking appropriate measures to ensure all actions/activities are undertaken in a timely manner.
  • Interrogation of various databases and bespoke information/management systems to support the development, analysis, and delivery of scanning surveillance activities.
  • Working with senior managers, colleagues from across APHA and people from outside APHA
  • Use bespoke APHA surveillance data systems.
