Contract: 11 Month Fixed Term Contract
Hours: 1 day per week (8 hours)
Working Hours: 08:00 – 17:00
Preferred Day: Thursday (flexibility available)



About the Role

Bhuku Ltd is seeking an enthusiastic Chess Tutor to deliver our Skills Ninja: Checkmate programme at HMP/YOI Isis.

Skills Ninja: Checkmate is an engaging personal development programme that uses chess as a tool to develop strategic thinking, patience, confidence, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

The programme helps learners build valuable life skills while encouraging positive behaviour, focus and personal development. It is designed to engage individuals who may not typically participate in traditional classroom learning.



Key Responsibilities

The Chess Tutor will be responsible for:
• Delivering the Skills Ninja: Checkmate chess and life skills programme
• Teaching chess fundamentals and strategy to beginner and intermediate players
• Facilitating engaging group sessions that promote critical thinking and decision making
• Encouraging teamwork, patience and positive competition
• Supporting learners to develop confidence and focus through chess
• Monitoring learner progress and engagement
• Maintaining basic session records and attendance
• Working collaboratively with prison staff and education teams.

Sessions will typically involve small group delivery within a structured and supportive learning environment.



About the Programme – Skills Ninja: Checkmate

Skills Ninja: Checkmate is Bhuku Ltd’s innovative chess-based personal development course designed for custodial environments.

The programme uses chess to teach valuable transferable skills including:
• strategic thinking
• planning and decision making
• concentration and patience
• emotional control
• resilience and problem solving.

By embedding these life skills within a chess programme, learners develop confidence and focus while engaging in a positive and structured activity.



Essential Requirements
• Strong knowledge of chess fundamentals and strategy
• Ability to teach chess to beginners and intermediate learners
• Excellent communication and engagement skills
• Ability to facilitate group learning sessions
• Ability to work within a secure prison environment
• Willingness to complete prison security vetting.



Desirable
• Experience delivering education, coaching or mentoring
• Experience working with young adults or within custodial environments
• Teaching, coaching or youth work qualifications.

Candidates do not need to be a qualified teacher, although teaching or coaching experience is desirable.
