About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Highways Operative to develop skills and abilities while working as part of a team to help deliver a best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties.
Working flexibly, efficiently and effectively across various teams as directed, you will support activities to maintain highways, footpaths and structures in accordance with statutory requirements.
Activities & skills development include Quick Response; General Maintenance; Drainage; Road mender, Gully Emptying, Camera Van.
You will be required to attend training sessions, which may include day release working towards the completion of the nationally recognised NVQ Level 2 qualification in Construction & Civil Engineering, ensuring evidence is accurate and managed as part of onsite assessments.
The nature of the work may involve the jobholder carrying out activities outside of normal working hours, including night, weekends and public holidays, in all weather conditions to meet the needs of the service.

This role is a “Safety Critical Post” and, consequently, subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with our policies and procedures. A copy of our Substance Misuse Policy and Procedure is available upon request.
About You
To apply for this post, you must:
- Have GCSE’s – minimum Grade C in Mathematics and English or equivalent (Key Skills at Level 2).
- Be willing to develop own skills, knowledge and experience & have a flexible approach to changing work tasks.
- Have experience of working as part of a team, good numeracy and communications skills and have an understanding of the principles of customer care.
- Have relevant out of school activities or hobbies and, although no prior Highways knowledge is required, an interest in this area of work is desirable.
- Have an organised approach to work in relation to working and record keeping.
- Have a good Attendance Record and be willing and able to travel to the training facilities or other work-based sites.
- Be a good team worker, who is able to work well with others and follow instructions
