You will join our successful orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medical education team at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in a split orthopaedic education and musculoskeletal physiotherapy role. Working in partnership with the University of Birmingham and Aston University Medical Schools you will assist in the educational (Teaching) delivery of 2-week musculoskeletal placements for 3rd, 4th and 5th year medical students. The post holder will assist operationally, on all aspects of undergraduate medical teaching at the Trust ensuring the educational standards are met and that student satisfaction is optimised. You will also have opportunities to assist during postgraduate teaching on the orthopaedic general practitioner (GP) and orthopaedic surgical trainee training programmes run by the hospital.
This is a unique opportunity which will allow you to develop core knowledge, experience, and skills in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medicine. It will help the successful candidate to improve their existing knowledge base in musculoskeletal and orthopaedic practice. This role will function as a springboard for future development for higher clinical bandings and / or academic employment by exposure to the four pillars of advance practice. It is essential that the post holder can exercise initiative within the role.
The post holder will also work in our state-of-the-art musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy centre (College Green) delivering clinically effective and evidence-based programmes for patients.
There will be opportunities to develop skills in clinical audit, service evaluation, service improvement projects and to participate in academic writing for publication.
The role is for 37.5 hours per week and is expected to be split between clinical and education.
1. To work with the Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow, to deliver and evaluate the undergraduate medical education service.
2. The delivery of orthopedic and musculoskeletal education presenting to large cohorts as well as smaller groups (1:1, small group, lecture based, practical sessions, simulated teaching) in the field of MSK and Orthopaedics.
3. To participate and develop clinical and educational audits and /or service evaluations and quality improvement projects to improve and monitorservice provision.
4. To provide physiotherapy services to musculoskeletal outpatients to a high standard within the Trust and community clinics.
5. To perform advanced assessment of patients with diverse and complex presentations, to determine a clinical diagnosis and provide effective treatment plans as an autonomous practitioner, in line with CSP and department standards.

Teaching
To deliver all aspects of undergraduate medical education (1:1, small group, lecture based, practical sessions, simulated teaching) in the field of MSK and Orthopaedics.
•To assist in the evaluation of teaching methods for students and implement changes in teaching practice with the Teaching Fellow.
•To support students in research, audit and elective placement projects.
•To provide consolidation and revision sessions for students prior to exams
•To assist the Medical Education Co-ordinator in producing timetables for students.
•To assist the Medical Education Co-ordinator in reviewing student feedback and to discuss with the Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow on any potential changes to the teaching programme.
•To implement changes to timetables in liaison with the undergraduate teaching team using student feedback and HEI guidance.
•To participate in and contribute to the undergraduate steering committee and to participate in contribute to any meetings with HEI’s as necessary.
• To participate and develop clinical and educational audits and /or service evaluations and quality improvement projects to improve and monitor service provision
•Assist with the co-ordination of the monitoring, training and development of trust employed educators.
•Assist the Clinical Teaching Fellow to raise the profile of education within the Trust and with external agencies.
•Facilitation of evidence-based education and critical appraisal skills including peer review.
•Identification of key educational articles/ guidelines for the trust and improve awareness and availability
Clinical
To be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of your own work, including the management of a caseload of patients without direct supervision. This may include clinics at community venues.
•To perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse and complex presentations, using manual assessment techniques, analytical skills and clinical reasoning to determine a diagnosis.
•To formulate and deliver individual treatment programmes based on evidence-based practice, using clinical reasoning and a wide range of manual physiotherapy techniques. To evaluate and modify treatment plans according to assessment and patient needs, discharging them when appropriate.
•To communicate effectively and gain informed consent from patients, carers and other professionals to maximise rehabilitation potential and ensure understanding of condition and/or surgery. This will, on occasions, include complex and sensitive information requiring skills of explanation, motivation and persuasion to overcome physical, emotional, mental and cultural barriers.
•To take delegated responsibility from lead member of staff on duty and feedback as appropriate to them.
•To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation in line with departmental and CSP standards, including communication of assessment and treatment results to appropriate disciplines in the form of reports and letters.
•Liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care and progress to ensure co-ordinated service delivery.
•To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
•To work evenings and weekends as part of contracted hours as required.
•To be able to travel to community venues for meetings and clinical commitments.
