Reports To: Domestic Supervisor / Facilities Supervisor
Salary: £12.51 per hour (NHS Agenda for Change Band 2 – subject to annual pay uplift from April)
Job Summary
The Domestic Assistant is responsible for delivering a high standard of cleaning and hygiene across hospital wards, clinical areas, and non-clinical departments. The role supports infection prevention and ensures a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
The post holder will follow national NHS cleaning standards and trust policies to maintain hygiene and cleanliness throughout the facility.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Cleaning and Hygiene
Carry out routine and deep cleaning duties across wards, departments, offices, corridors, and public areas.
Clean patient areas including bed spaces, bathrooms, and clinical rooms following infection prevention guidelines.
Dust, mop, vacuum, and disinfect surfaces and floors according to cleaning schedules.
Clean and sanitise touchpoints such as door handles, switches, and handrails.
Ensure waste is disposed of correctly in line with hospital policies.
Infection Prevention and Control
Follow all infection control procedures including use of appropriate cleaning products and PPE.
Support enhanced cleaning procedures in high-risk or isolation areas.
Report hazards, spills, or infection risks to supervisors immediately.
Equipment and Supplies
Safely use and maintain cleaning equipment.
Replenish consumables such as soap, paper towels, and sanitiser.
Store cleaning chemicals safely according to COSHH regulations.
Health and Safety
Follow all Trust health and safety policies.
Ensure safe handling of waste and linen.
Report accidents, incidents, or maintenance issues promptly.
Teamwork and Communication
Work as part of the domestic services team to ensure all cleaning schedules are completed.
Communicate respectfully with patients, visitors, and staff.
Support colleagues and supervisors to maintain service standards.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Ability to follow instructions and cleaning procedures.
Good attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
Understanding of basic hygiene and safety practices.
Ability to communicate politely with staff, patients, and visitors.
Physically able to carry out cleaning duties including lifting equipment and standing for extended periods.
Desirable Criteria
Previous cleaning experience (healthcare, hospitality, or commercial cleaning).
Knowledge of infection prevention practices.
Experience using professional cleaning equipment or chemicals.
Working Conditions
Work may take place in clinical environments including wards and patient areas.
Shift work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
PPE will be provided where required.
