Crynodeb

The post will be ideal for a trainee at Core or Higher surgical training level wishing to undertake a higher degree (PhD). The post will be for 3 years, starting August 2026. The Department has a strong track record for completion of higher degrees.

Full-time post at CT or ST level in general surgery for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The appointed candidate will be expected to provide support for a full range of emergency general surgery services and elective surgery at the level appointed to.

Our busy on-call service is split between sub-specialist GI and HPB services, with a Surgical Triage Unit opened in 2015 delivering ambulatory emergency care. Nottingham has currently returned more entries to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit than any other centre and is also a Major Trauma Unit.
The Trust offers a full range of general surgery elective services in HPB, UGI and colorectal surgery along with transplant and endocrine. All services undertake elective and oncall cover.

The successful applicants will be appointed to the colorectal Unit. The Nottingham Colorectal Service is a large tertiary referral unit engaged in all aspects of colorectal surgery. You will be provided with an academic supervisor and be expected to register for a higher degree with the University of Nottingham (PhD/DM). A number of projects are available to potential candidates with different supervisors. It is anticipated you will also participate in undergraduate teaching and conduct service evaluation projects as part of the role. Applications for external funding will be supported. The Unit has a strong track record in surgical research, along with helping candidates complete higher degrees.
