Key Responsibilities Clinical Quality and Safety Professional Leadership and Operational Management Service and Workforce Development/Transformation Clinical Governance Risk and Patient Experience Clinical Quality and Safety To provide dynamic, professional leadership and direction to all departments, ensuring the highest standard of clinical care and service provision to patients. To be an accessible and visible presence across all departments within the given area of responsibility, advising and supporting department staff, patients and their families. To facilitate, support and empower Departmental Managers to manage their areas effectively, supporting the development of the individual, their ward staff and their services. To work collaboratively with other Matrons in the Trust, contributing to the development and delivery of both Trust and Divisional objectives and assisting in the delivery of the Clinical Governance Agenda. To participate in the Trusts on call 7 day Matrons rota Clinical Governance Risk and Patient Experience Work with the Corporate Nursing and the senior management team to monitor and evaluate Patient Experience within the service lines. To work closely with the tri-umvirate to ensure monitoring of compliance with clinical governance standards, regulatory requirements, other Trust-wide policies and processes and ensure best practice requirements are in place. Ensure that complaints and issues from patients and staff are resolved in a timely and appropriate manner in line with Trust policy and procedures. Maintain review and update the service Risk Register escalating high risks to specialty and Trust level as appropriate. Ensure compliance with organisational targets for reporting and investigating incidents, complaints and serious incidents. Ensure a safe and open culture to share learning from incident/complaints and feedback from incidents investigations with staff. Represent all specialities at speciality and Trust governance meetings as required. Lead on Emergency and Business Continuity Planning and ensure that all staff understand their roles and responsibilities. Professional Leadership and Operational Management Be visible and accessible and provide clinical and professional leadership to all members of the team. Maintain a culture of service quality and improvement and excellent patient experience. Develop and embed cross site patient pathways and standard operating procedures. Share line management responsibility for staff ensuring that all nursing staff participate in performance review / appraisal. Share responsibility and accountability for the effective management of resources within the nursing budgets including the usage of bank and agency nursing staff ensuring financial resources are controlled and utilised effectively and demonstrating value for money and high quality patient care. Work within your professional code of practice (HCPC or NMC) and ensure that all nursing staff work within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct. Take appropriate action when standards are not met. Ensure that care provided is responsive, safe and effective. To work closely with all members of the multi professional team to address service delivery issues and challenges to ensure the delivery of high quality care within available resources. Service and Workforce Development To ensure effective strategies for the recruitment, retention and development of nursing staff are maintained and further developed. Act as a role model to staff at all times, exhibiting high standards of professional behaviour and maintaining an innovative, creative and developmental leadership style. Provide a positive learning and developmental environment for all pre and post registration practitioners. Manage all matters relating to capability, poor performance and sickness absence proactively and in line with the relevant Trust policies. To ensure compliance with the Trusts statutory and mandatory training requirements, monitoring departmental performance and putting action plans in place where performance falls below the agreed standards Work with the senior nursing management team and corporate nursing to ensure that the staff establishment and profile is sufficient to meet the needs of the service, is in line with national guidance and is safe and manageable within the financial resources available.
