DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The medical establishment provides a wide array of clinical professionals within the team , you will be expected to liaise with a diverse range of surgical colleagues throughout your time here at The Christie The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to clinical areas including wards, surgical clinics, theatres and audit. There is expectation for the undertaking of a research project alongside teaching and educational activities Specialist clinical care for patients across the urology service including (but not limited to) prostate, pelvic and retroperitoneal malignancy, including pre-operative assessment, peri-operative management, and follow-up. High-quality operative contribution to Level II and Level III urological cancer surgery, including increasing responsibility in complex cases as competency develops. Specialist outpatient clinics and diagnostic sessions, contributing to timely assessment, investigation, decision-making and patient-centred planning. Active participation in specialist MDTs, supporting robust clinical decision-making, accurate documentation and coordinated tertiary care. Service administration and pathway support, ensuring safe patient flow, clear communication, and high standards of record keeping. Teaching and training, supporting education of junior colleagues and contributing to a learning culture within the team. Audit, outcomes review and quality improvement, contributing to the ongoing refinement of complex cancer pathways. Clinical and translational research activity, with a clear expectation of progressing work to national/international presentation and, where possible, publication during the post. The Greater Manchester prostate cancer service The complex retroperitoneal and pelvic cancer surgical pathways, including open/robotic retroperitoneal surgery Relevant specialist inpatient and day-case activity linked to operative caseload, peri-operative care and tertiary referrals Administration Maintain clear, timely and accurate clinical documentation, including operative notes, clinic letters and MDT outcomes. Support smooth running of tertiary referral pathways through effective coordination with MDT coordinators, specialist nursing and administrative teams. Contribute to service development tasks as agreed (e.g., pathway refinement, clinic efficiency, theatre productivity, referral triage processes). Ensure communication with referring teams is professional, consistent and clinically robust. Teaching Participate in departmental teaching and skills development sessions. Provide day-to-day supervision and practical teaching to junior doctors and trainees (ward-based, clinic, theatre and MDT learning). Contribute to a supportive training culture where feedback is routine and expectations are clear. Research A clear commitment to research is essential. The post holder will be expected to: Participate in, and increasingly lead, clinical and translational research in penile, testis and retroperitoneal malignancy. Develop research outputs to national/international presentation, and where possible, peer-reviewed publication within the duration of the fellowship. Collaborate with the wider MDT and research infrastructure to identify meaningful clinical questions and deliver impactful projects. Governance, quality and risk management Participate in incident reporting, learning reviews and governance meetings as required. Contribute actively to audit and quality improvement, using outcomes data to refine surgical pathways and maintain excellence in complex care. Maintain high standards in consent, peri-operative safety, infection prevention and clinical risk management. Scope for progression and promotion This post is designed for senior trainees aiming for future leadership in specialist urological oncology. The fellowship offers progression through increasing surgical responsibility, leadership within clinical pathways, and mentored development in service improvement and research outputs. Education and training Close consultant supervision in theatre with structured development and increasing independence. Embedded MDT learning and specialist pathway exposure. Opportunities to contribute to team teaching and broader educational activity within the unit Twice monthly joint oncology/ surgery research meeting Monthly dedicated penile cancer research meeting Mentoring Mentorship is an explicit feature of the role.
