About us

UCL is a radically different university. Founded in 1826 in the heart of London, we were the first university in England to welcome students of any religion and the first to welcome women to university education. Today UCL has over 50,000 students and 15,000 staff, is one of the world's top 10 universities and is recognised as one of the most successful research institutions in the world, consistently ranked as one of the top ten universities in the world (QS World University Rankings 2010-2024) and is 2nd in the UK for research power and 1st in London (REF 2021).

The UCL Estate comprises over 270 buildings valued at over £3 Billion, more than four million square feet of academic accommodation and approaching 4,250 student bedrooms. The scale, variety and complexity of the Estate are unparalleled in the Higher Education sector.

The Area Facilities Management Team (AFM Team) are part of the Campus Experience and Infrastructure division. The AFM Team enables and facilitates the smooth running of the Estate and enhances the customer experience by overseeing campus operations.

About the role

We are recruiting for a Facilities Manager who will play a key role in supporting the smooth, safe and effective operation of UCL's Bloomsbury campus. Working as part of the Area Facilities Management team within Campus Experience & Infrastructure, the postholder will take day-to-day responsibility for a defined portfolio of buildings, acting as a primary point of contact for departments, service partners and external stakeholders.

You will maintain a detailed understanding of activity across your buildings, proactively coordinating facilities and estates services to minimise disruption and enhance the customer experience. This includes overseeing cleaning, fire safety and general facilities inspections, supporting the resolution of faults and incidents, and ensuring that issues are escalated and addressed appropriately.

The role involves building strong, collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including academic and professional services teams, contractors, landlords and central CE&I colleagues. You will support effective communication around planned works and projects, chair Building User Group meetings, and work closely with specialist teams such as Fire Safety and Accessibility to support compliance and reasonable adjustments.

You will also deputise for the Area Facilities Manager when required and contribute to continuous service improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance facilities, processes and the overall campus experience.

About you

You will bring practical experience of managing or monitoring estates and facilities services, working with both contractors and in-house teams in a complex operational environment. You will have a sound working knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and be confident applying this in practice.

Comfortable working independently while collaborating closely with others, you're able to build effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and communicate clearly at all levels. You're customer-focused, organised and calm under pressure, with the ability to manage competing priorities and resolve issues in a considered, solutions-focused way.

Confident using IT systems to support facilities operations, including helpdesk or workplace management systems, you will ideally have experience of working within higher education or a similarly complex estate. Familiarity with service specifications, contracts or SLAs would be an advantage, as would a relevant professional qualification in facilities management, building or engineering maintenance.
