We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant to join our team at Scarborough Hospital. We are looking to appoint a new Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM).
Applicants are eligible to apply if they are on the specialist register for Intensive Care Medicine, or they are within 6 months at interview date, of completing their certificate of completion of training. Intensive Care Medicine applicants from single or dual training backgrounds are welcome to apply.
The post holder will carry out duties as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. This position is based at Scarborough Hospital.
Scarborough Hospital ICU currently admits around 400 patients per year and is staffed to 6 level 3 beds. The Intensive care unit is a brand-new state-of-the-art unit, which recently opened in May 2025. It is a beautifully spacious unit with 10 individual patient rooms. It has a fantastic roof terrace for patients and staff. It has good staff facilities and a high-performance clinical information system. There is an experienced senior nurse leadership and nursing educator team. There is an active Critical Care outreach team.
Scarborough Hospital has a main theatre suite that comprises five theatres in addition to which there is a separate maternity theatre. Surgical services currently supported include general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, urology and minor vascular surgery.
The post holder will carry out their duties as either a Consultant in Anaesthesia, or as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine.
If application for Anaesthesia, you will work as an Anaesthetist to deliver Anaesthesia services for theatres. Potential lists would include general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, urology, maternity cover, and minor vascular surgery.
If application for Intensive care, you will do ICU ward rounds, manage referrals, and help run the Critical Care services for the Hospital.

Job Title: Consultant Intensivist
Work base location: Scarborough Hospital.
Average weekly programmed activities: 10 PA
Up to 2 additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder based on separate agreement.
· The standard Scarborough ICU rota represents 5 PAs
Job plans can be created for single stream applicants. Job plans can be created for applicants from different dual speciality backgrounds. There is a requirement to provide cross-site work in line with current patterns within the department.
The standard core SPA is 1.25 PA week.
There may be an opportunity to increase SPA, where need arises, in line with departmental objectives.
On call is based on a 1:8
This equates to 46 nights on calls per year or 3.8 night on calls per month. This is 1 weekend every 2 months. The on-call rota is currently defined as a Category A rota. For on-call duties the post holder will be required to reside within 30 minutes of the hospital. There is an on-call rota for theatres and obstetrics and there is an on call rota for Critical Care. Unpredictable on call is determined and subject to the NHS standard hours monitoring exercise. On call intensity can obviously vary, but the monitoring exercise conducted in 2024 reflects low average overall on call intensity.

Job plans can be discussed and tailored with the Clinical Director. Job plans will become operational on commencement. All job plans are agreed in line with the Trust’s job planning principles.
