HR / Payroll Officer

Brook Street have a great opportunity to work with one of our Public Sector clients based in Newport for a HR / Payroll officer on a temporary basis. Please see the below description and if you have the necessary experience and feel you would be a great fit for the team apply direct.

Hours - 37 hours per week
Pay - £15.01 per hour
Temporary - 6-12 months initial term

About the role
HR and Payroll Officers work as part of a small team to process all HR and Payroll changes through iTrent (HR/Payroll system). Each team member is required to meet tight payroll deadlines and take responsibility for ensuring that payroll work is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

All team members will be expected to understand and action all HR/Payroll processes, including interpreting IPO policy and guidance, statutory leave and sick pay rules, HMRC rules and pension scheme information.

In addition to this, the payroll team will ensure that any ad hoc queries are responded to and pay awards/bonus schemes are processed correctly within the necessary deadlines.

Main Duties Consist of but not limited to:

  • Using the HR/Payroll system (iTrent) to accurately process all HR & Payroll changes including but not limited to:

-New starters & Transfers in

-Leavers & Transfers out

-Promotions, temporary promotions, and reversions

-Pension scheme administration

-Sick pay calculations and letters

-Administering family friendly policies & salary sacrifice schemes

  • Investigating and resolving employee queries. 
  • Understanding the logic behind payroll elements and be able to complete manual calculations where appropriate.
  • Preparing for the monthly payroll run and completing processing and checking to published deadlines, including loading overtime and other self-service elements.
  • Conducting a range of payroll checks before the BACS pay run.
  • Processing annual pay awards, bonus schemes and other IPO rewards.
  • Conducting one-off activity such as pensions data cleanse exercises.
  • Maintaining accurate employee files and records.
  • Examine complex information and obtain further information if needed to make accurate decisions.
  • Monitor the storage of critical data and customer information to support decision making. Conduct regular reviews to ensure that personal data is stored accurately, confidentially and responsibly.
  • Responding and actioning pension EPNs.
  • Attending regular meetings with the team.

Essential criteria

  • Payroll Experience (1 year +)
  • Confident and proficient using the iTrent HR and Payroll system and Microsoft Excel (experience using iTrent is essential).
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve queries independently.
  • Highly organised, able to manage priorities and meet strict deadlines while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new systems, processes, or guidance.

Additional information:

Payroll qualifications would be an advantage. The post holder will need to understand the logic and rules behind the pay elements to sense check outputs from pay runs and manually calculate if required.

Other information

This role will be carried out in line with IPO hybrid working arrangements, with a minimum of 20%/40% contractual onsite attendance. However, the postholder will be expected to attend the office as required to support monthly payroll activities, team days, and business needs.
