We are looking for a Private Sector Housing Options Officer to join our Housing Needs Team to work closely with private landlords, to support residents of Scarborough.

The Council’s Housing Needs responsibilities include the management of the Housing Options and Homelessness Teams across the Localities. Overseeing the provision of an efficient and effective housing options service and ensuring the Council meets its statutory obligations under the Housing Act 1996 Part 7, Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 and related legislation. Complying with the prevention, relief and main housing duties under the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017. A key part of this involves assisting applicants to secure and move into private rented accommodation.



The role

As our Private Sector Housing Options Officer, you will provide private landlord liaison to develop and explore opportunities in the private rented sector for clients at risk of homelessness and households accommodated by the Council in temporary accommodation. You will work with clients to assist moves into independent private rented accommodation and provide support where needed. You will offer financial and budgeting advice to prospective tenants, including assistance with the completion of benefit/Universal Credit applications and enabling individuals to make choices over their expenditure. You will develop and review initiatives to improve sustainability and to build relationships with external agencies to facilitate and offer tenancy support and assistance. This role will play a key role in developing sustainable relationships with private landlords with accommodation in the Scarborough locality and to provide advice and assistance to them to enhance the working relationship with the Council.



What you will bring

This is a very challenging role that requires someone who is resilient, has empathy and patience to deal with clients in difficult situations. You will also have:

• Understanding and knowledge of the impacts of homelessness.

• Awareness, knowledge, and adherence to Information Governance/Data Protection principles.

• Awareness and knowledge of Equality legislation.

• Awareness and knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.

• Awareness and knowledge of landlord legislation.

• Experience of interagency and partnership working.

• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

• Good working knowledge of IT systems such as Microsoft office.

• Safeguarding awareness.

• Ability to use your own initiative and make instant decisions offering sound advice.

• Ability to travel around the area.

An enhanced DBS is required for this position.
