Our coastal flood risk modelling advisors provide expert technical advice to help build a country more resilient to climate change.

As a Coastal Flood Risk Modelling Advisor you will provide expert advice to our colleagues and a range of partners. Your advice will contribute to their decision making on how to appropriately manage coastal flood risk at a community or national scale, taking into account the impacts of flooding, and our dynamic coastline.

In this role you will
• be expected to provide expert advice, both internal and external to the Environment Agency, on coastal flood risk modelling and the value of coastal evidence.
• demonstrate skills, knowledge and experience of building and running wave transformation, wave overtopping and inundation models.
• have knowledge and experience in a variety of coastal modelling software and relevant methodologies / guidance.
• undertake technical quality assurance to support a range of outcomes including delivering the Asset Management programme
• provide expert technical input to national coastal modelling research and development projects
• apply continuous improvement techniques to improve existing ways of working
• provide technical leadership and coach / mentor others
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

The Coastal Flood Risk Modelling team sits within the wider Digital, Data and Evidence department. We are a national team who provide quality assurance, expert analysis and advice on coastal flood risk modelling for our flood and coastal risk management colleagues across the business. The team comprises modelling specialists who contribute to delivering critical evidence for determining potential impacts on coastal communities and for informing flood risk management decision making.

Experience/skills required

To perform this role we require someone with strong and demonstrable experience of:
• coastal processes and the importance of evidence in Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management
• the ability to build, run, interrogate and interpret coastal flood risk models
• the techniques, packages, data and guidance used to model wave transformation, sea levels, wave overtopping, breach modelling and inundation e.g. EurOtop, SWAN, TUFLOW, MIKE,

excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as enjoying building relationships, influencing and collaborating with others.
• prioritising programmes / projects and the ability to manage your own workload.
• the confidence to lead on technical projects, making decisions and solving problems.
• the ability to mentor/coach others
• awareness of health, safety and wellbeing and a commitment to Equality Diversity and Inclusion
