Crynodeb
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for ME/CFS/FMS reports directly to the deputy matron for specialist services. They work alongside other professionals and experts in ME/CFS/FMS including the Clinical Lead, physicians, general manager and Allied Health Professionals.
The CNS acts as an expert resource in ME/CFS/FMS management by working closely with patients, cares, consultants, general practitioners, therapists, social services and other stakeholders across primary and secondary care. The post holder will support the continuing progression of patient care and management within the hospital setting, while promoting and maintaining independence and self-management. They will work with the specialist team to develop and implement a service that is in line with NICE guidance and which supports multi-disciplinary teams.
The CNS will support nurse-led clinics at the RLHIM contributing to the best care for people with ME/CFS/FMS. The post holder will provide both face-to-face and virtual support to patients and will independently conduct clinics to assess, review and monitor patients’ progress. The CNS will be responsible for accurately recording and interpreting patient outcome measures, as well as, actively collecting and auditing data to inform service development and improvements. In addition to their clinic duties, the CNS will train and educate patients on managing their condition.

• Undertake assessment of individuals using a range of different assessment methods, which may include physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests or advanced health needs assessment
• Draw on a diverse range of knowledge in their decision-making to determine evidence-based therapeutic interventions; actively monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
• Prescribe appropriately for patients and within the individual’s scope of practice if a qualified independent non-medical prescriber.
• To run nurse led clinics for patients.
• To provide direct advice to GPs and other allied health professionals.
• To assist with teaching and training of healthcare professionals on ME/CFS/FMS within the trust and outside agencies.
• To assist in the provision of inpatient referrals.
• Provide education to patients, families and healthcare professionals.
• To be a visible presence on the hospital wards, providing information and support to patients and staff.

MAIN DUTIES continued fro above:
• To assist in clinical trials, audits and research into ME/CFS/FMS and future management.
• Provide a nurse-led telephone clinic. Assessing patient needs and requirements and acting accordingly.
• To contribute to the development of services for people with ME/CFS/FMS.
• Participate in Multidisciplinary assessment clinics.
• Maintain skills and experience in management of epilepsy services and facilitate the implementation of the UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy.
• To review ME/CFS/FMS nursing practice and implement appropriate changes based on research/best practice.
• Develop and implement Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives within the ME/CFS/FMS service.
• Participate in a programme of self-development, clinical supervision and individual performance review (IPR).
• Work within the guidelines established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) including The Code and Scope of Professional Practice and all Trust guidelines.
• Promote and maintain effective communication.
The Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM)is a centre for evidence-based practice, education and research, specialising in chronic and complex medical conditions. Our mission is to provide a person-centred, holistic approach, including self-care, in order to help people with chronic and complex medical conditions live well and feel better. Our approach considers the whole person and their environment in the quest for optimal health and wellbeing. In order to achieve this, we provide a combination of lifestyle strategies, medical, physical and psychological treatment, as well as advice on safe and appropriate use of complementary therapies. We also deliver and encourage self-care approaches which can continue to be used by patients after discharge. The post-holder will join the ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia service.This service provides multidisciplinary treatment pathways for adult patients with these complex, chronic medical conditions and is the largest such services in London and the South-East. The service incorporates physician care (a Specialist Physician and Specialty Doctors), occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Committment Therapy, Trauma-focused Therapy, EMDR, Mindfulness, Autogenic Training), dietetics and Western Medical acupuncture (for chronic pain).
