About the Role
We are seeking a Family Service Manager to lead our flagship family service at HMP Altcourse. This hands‑on role is ideal for someone confident in complex prison environments and committed to meaningful change. You will lead a multidisciplinary team delivering high‑quality, therapeutically informed, arts‑based work with men in custody and their families, combining creative group interventions, family counselling, and practical support in a challenging setting.
As the Family Service Manager, you will lead a team of Programme Co‑ordinators, Facilitators, Family Counsellors, a Deputy Service Manager, and other staff. The team delivers nationally recognised programmes such as Fathers Inside and Man Up across custodial and community settings. The role requires strong leadership and experience managing a diverse team, with responsibility for supporting, enabling, and empowering staff to deliver high‑quality support to participants and their families. You will work closely with prison and Sodexo colleagues, as well as internal SIG teams, to ensure innovative, safe, and compassionate service delivery.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Line Management throughout the employee lifecycle embedding a culture of learning, development, reflection, and evaluation.
- Creative leadership of creating and delivering engaging high-quality services and interventions which support rehabilitation, reintegration, and culture shifts in systems of power and compliance.
- Manage day-to-day operational delivery of programmes, the service, and visitors centre.
- Ensure core responsibilities and contractual requirements are fulfilled.
- Striving to ensure excellence and quality in our service delivery.
Why work with Safe Ground Prisons?
At SIG Safe Ground, we work differently. As an arts‑based, therapeutically informed charity with over 30 years’ experience in the criminal justice system, we support people in custody and their families to strengthen relationships, reflect on behaviours, and navigate change without shame.
Working with Safe Ground means meeting people without judgement, holding space for accountability, and using creativity to challenge cycles of harm. We believe real change happens when people are seen, supported, and constructively challenged, including within prison environments.
Please be informed that as this role is based within a Prison environment, therefore further vetting from SIG's enhanced DBS will be required such as MOJ clearance.
About You
This role is for someone who believes change happens through relationships, not control. You will lead with warmth and clarity, balancing care with accountability, and thrive in a values‑led organisation that prioritises people, reflection, and creativity. You will be confident working in a prison environment and engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
We are looking for a proactive leader who can motivate and empower a team, drive excellence, and provide practical solutions. Knowledge of the criminal justice system is essential, and experience in a similar setting is ideal. You will build rapport, earn trust, and create opportunities for people to grow both professionally and personally.
You should have:
Experience facilitating group programmes and/or delivering training (ideally in creative or similar environments).
Experience working with diverse groups from varied backgrounds.
Demonstrable experience leading a service or team.
Strong line management skills.
Ability to motivate teams to meet KPIs.
Confidence promoting the service externally.
Flexibility, including participation in an on‑call rota when required.
Strong IT skills and ability to learn new systems (case management, Microsoft, ATS, HR software).
Alignment with SIG values: Ambition, Empowerment, Inclusivity, and Transparency.
What we Offer
25 days (Full time equivalent) annual leave, increasing with the length of service
Employer Pension Contribution
Eligibility to register with Blue Light Discount Card
Access to discounted tickets for music events, shows, sports and more
