Neway International are seeking a Welsh Language Translation Officer to join our client based with Newport City Council.
Location Godfrey Road, Newport, South Wales, NP20 4UR (Office‑based during induction, then dependent on business need)
Hours: 37 hours per week
Start Date16 March 2026
Duration: 12 Weeks (extended after review)
Pay Rates
PAYE: £16.35 per hour
The Role: The Welsh Language Translation Officer will support the implementation and monitoring of the Welsh Language Standards across Newport City Council. The role includes providing translation and proofreading services, supporting bilingual communication, advising staff and Members on Welsh language requirements, and contributing to the Council’s Welsh Language Strategy. You will work closely with the Welsh Language Policy Officer and Senior Equalities Officer to embed Welsh language considerations across policy, practice and service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Provide Welsh–English translation and proofreading services for Council documents.
Assist with managing Welsh‑medium files, project records and correspondence.
Advise officers on effective bilingual communication in line with Welsh Language Standards.
Support maintenance of the Council’s Welsh language website content and social media channels.
Assist with administration relating to documents requiring external translation.
Provide verbal translation services when required.
Support the implementation of Welsh Language Standards across the organisation.
Promote cultural and service‑delivery change to strengthen Welsh language use.
Build and maintain relationships with national bodies, regulators and community organisations, including the Welsh Language Commissioner.
Support delivery of the Council’s five‑year Welsh Language Strategy.
Monitor developments in Welsh language translation and terminology.
Work with Equalities colleagues to embed Welsh language within equality and fairness frameworks.
Support initiatives to promote Welsh language use in the workplace.
Deliver or support training to staff on Welsh language understanding and usage.
Attend relevant training and Welsh language events as part of professional development.
Carry out additional duties as required by the Policy and Partnership Manager.
Candidate Requirements: Essential Qualifications & Experience
Relevant degree or equivalent qualification/experience.
Experience providing Welsh language translation services.
Experience engaging with stakeholders and working in partnership.
Knowledge of Welsh language and equalities legislation, including the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 and Equality Act 2010.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in Welsh and English.
Ability to present information clearly to varied audiences.
Strong organisational and planning skills.
Ability to manage high workloads and conflicting priorities.
Desirable
Translation/proof‑reading qualifications.
Membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru or willingness to work towards it.
Familiarity with translation memory software (e.g., Wordfast).
Knowledge of policy and strategy development.
Understanding of organisational change tools and methods.
Understanding of local government and Welsh Government agendas.
Ability to produce written work in Welsh to a high standard.
Customer‑focused and solution‑focused approach.
