Overview:

East Coast Hydrogen (ECH) is an energy transition initiative to repurpose and expand the existing >2barg gas network for hydrogen delivery across the North-East by converting existing assets and introducing new infrastructure. The project will create a reliable hydrogen network to support decarbonisation and is crucial to the UK’s net-zero ambitions in helping decarbonise the region's energy supply.

Scope of work:

To lead and manage the engineering delivery of the FEED phase of the East Coast Hydrogen Project in line with Ofgem requirements and ensuring alignment with company standards, safety regulations, and project governance. This role will play a pivotal part in developing the East Coast hydrogen network, supporting innovation, stakeholder engagement, and technical assurance throughout the project lifecycle.

The daily duties will be as follows:

• Lead the technical delivery of FEED phase for the East Coast Hydrogen project in line with policies, processes,
and standards.
• Manage multiple consultants carrying out engineering work packages to develop the East Coast
• Ensuring technical assurance and approval of both internal and consultant deliverables.
• Lead technical coordination with National Gas to repurpose hydrogen transmission infrastructure in the NGN
region and with other key stakeholders connecting to the ECH network.
• Key member of the core project manager team, providing engineering expertise in key project decisions,
including project strategies, programme development and risk management.
• Assist stakeholders in planning and integrating hydrogen infrastructure.
• Ensure safe asset design aligned with company standards and identify areas for improvement.
• Prepare and manage engineering documentation in accordance with project governance.
• Deliver regular project updates and support governance review processes.
• Define engineering scopes for key contracts and support procurement activities.
• Review and consolidate technical documentation from suppliers and contractors.
• Align engineering deliverables with commercial, scheduling, and risk management teams.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle.
• Contribute technical input to the Development Consent Order process.
• Lead compliance with Process Safety, Technical Safety, and Functional Safety standards.
• Ensure engineering decisions support safe commissioning and long-term operations.

The successful candidate will have the following:

• Graduate Engineer in mechanical or process engineering or similar.
• Chartered Engineer status
• Masters degree and design appraiser qualifications (desirable)
• At least 10 years of experience in design and engineering management in the gas sector.
• Engineering experience in gas transmission and distribution, Oil and gas industries, including LPG, Hydrogen and
Biomethane.
• Thorough knowledge of UK gas transmission and distribution design and standards.
• Experienced in leading engineering teams and consultants to deliver complex projects.
• Experience in the management of large-scale FEED stage projects.
• In-depth knowledge of IGEM, ASME, ISO, ASTM and API standards
• Strong commitment to process safety and coordinating with operation, construction and project teams from
technical aspects.
• Experience in technical development on innovation projects.
• Experience in appraisal and approval of design and engineering deliverables
• Experience with working on hydrogen projects and an understanding of the unique challenges associated with
them.
• An understanding of network analysis and flow assurance, environmental and planning processes, constraints
and the interface with design.
