Summary

About us

University College London is London's Global University - a place where bold thinking, world-leading research and transformative education come together in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Our estate is as ambitious as our academic community, spanning more than 240 buildings, over 6.5 million square feet of space and thousands of student bedrooms across Bloomsbury and UCL East. It is a diverse and complex portfolio that supports more than 46,000 students and 13,000 staff, and it continues to evolve in response to our vision for the future.

Within Campus Experience and Infrastructure and Estates Development, a team of around 350 professionals works collaboratively to plan, manage and enhance every aspect of the built environment. From master planning and capital delivery to operational excellence, we are united by a shared purpose: to create safe, sustainable and inspiring spaces that put students at the heart of the campus experience. Guided by our Estates Strategy principles - prioritising safety, sustainability, accessibility, efficiency and long-term value - we are shaping a resilient and future-ready university estate.

About the role

We are seeking a dynamic and accomplished Project Manager to join our Estates team at a pivotal moment in our development. Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, you will act as the University's Project Officer, taking ownership of the end-to-end delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects across new build, refurbishment, adaptation, cladding remediation, small works and strategic maintenance programmes.

Our projects range in value from £500,000 to over £100 million and are delivered within a live, complex academic environment. You will lead with clarity and authority, ensuring that safety, time, cost and quality objectives are achieved while operating within robust governance frameworks and stage-gate controls.

Working closely with Project Sponsors, the Portfolio Services Office and Project Boards, you will provide assurance that each scheme progresses with the appropriate financial approvals, risk management and compliance in place.

A significant aspect of the role involves leading and coordinating external consultant and contractor teams, ensuring clarity of responsibility, alignment with approved business cases and adherence to statutory obligations including planning, building regulations, the Building Safety Act and CDM requirements.

You will engage proactively with stakeholders across the university, fostering a collaborative and customer-focused environment from briefing and feasibility through to handover and post-occupancy evaluation.

Beyond delivery, you will be a champion of value - driving whole-life thinking, sustainability opportunities and continuous improvement. You will contribute to procurement strategies, manage financial processes with diligence, oversee risk registers and change control, and support the development of design and installation standards. Working with Assistant Project Managers, you will also play a key role in mentoring and strengthening capability within a high-performing, people-focused team.

Please note, this role is primarily based onsite at our Bidborough House office/Bloomsbury Campus with a minimum of 4-days per week.

About you

You are an experienced construction professional with a proven track record of delivering complex capital projects within large, occupied estates. Your background demonstrates strong technical knowledge of UK building construction, including refurbishment and improvement works, and you have successfully led projects from inception to completion, typically in the £5-10 million plus range.

You hold an appropriate qualification in Project Management or a relevant construction discipline, and you bring a confident understanding of statutory regulations, procurement routes and standard forms of building contract. Experience in laboratory, research or highly serviced environments would be advantageous, as would professional membership such as MCIOB, MRICS or IEng/CEng.

Just as importantly, you are self-disciplined, organised and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. You communicate with clarity and influence, producing concise reports, navigating complex stakeholder landscapes and building trusted relationships across academic and professional communities. You are comfortable operating within structured governance frameworks while remaining agile and solutions-focused.

Above all, you are motivated by purpose. You recognise that every project contributes to the student and staff experience and that thoughtful, sustainable estate development underpins academic excellence. If you are ready to help shape an estate that supports innovation, inclusivity and impact on a global stage, we would be delighted to hear from you.
