An exciting opportunity is available to join our growing team of Genomic Associates and Practitioners at the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine. This role will include an opportunity to work with mainstream settings to support WGS testing in other specialities as part of a GMSA funded project.

Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine is an integrated multidisciplinary genomic medicine service where Clinical Genetics, Willink Metabolic service, the Manchester Rare Conditions Centre and part of the North West Genomic Laboratory Hub are co-located on the 6th floor of the hospital.

Applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences are welcomed. The post would suit an individual with healthcare experience who is confident communicating with patients and families. Previous Genomic Practitioner experience, including WGS conversations, would be desirable. A caring and compassionate nature, empathic and non-judgmental approach and understanding of clinical genetics and attention to detail is essential.

Although fixed term for one year, we are hopeful the roles will become a substantive part of our clinical genetics workforce.

The role is responsible for facilitating the collection of information, consent, samples and test results to enable genomic counselling and testing for patients with rare diseases and their family members. Working within the clinical genetics department, the role will involve communicating with patients and their families directly by phone call and face to face to obtain family and medical histories to facilitate the diagnosis of genetic and genomic conditions. It will include obtaining appropriate samples for genetic testing and recording consent for these where appropriate. It will involve developing relationships with other specialities to support pathways for WGS testing outside of genetic services.

The Genomic Practitioner will work with families either prior or post clinic to improve experience and outcomes. The Genomic Practitioner will also help to facilitate access to the service, particularly amongst marginalised communities and families who are difficult to engage.

Each Genomic Practitioner will be allocated to one or two clinical subspecialty, to support the clinical work within those clinical teams and prioritise the genomic practitioner work needed within those teams.

Other roles may include facilitating patient support days, patient engagement events, professional education events and coordinating multidisciplinary meetings. Joining a team of Genomic Associates and Practitioners.
