Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full-Time, Temporary

About the Role

We are seeking caring, patient and resilient Primary SEMH Teaching Assistants to support younger pupils across Northampton. This role is ideal for individuals who want to make a lasting difference to children experiencing social, emotional and behavioural challenges in their early school years.

Your New School

You'll be joining a primary school that offers a nurturing, child‑centred environment, a supportive and collaborative staff team, clear behaviour policies and SEMH support systems, a focus on emotional wellbeing, positive routines and relationship‑building, and a warm and inclusive approach that values every child's individuality.

Your Responsibilities

In this role, you will be supporting children aged 4-11 with a range of SEMH needs, including emotional dysregulation, anxiety or attachment needs, low confidence or self‑esteem, behavioural challenges, and difficulties managing transitions or routines. To do this, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 or small‑group support depending on needs
  • Build safe, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Use de-escalation, positive reinforcement and school strategies to manage behaviour
  • Help pupils develop social skills, emotional regulation and resilience
  • Support classroom learning and encourage engagement through tailored approaches
  • Maintain strong safeguarding awareness and communicate effectively with staff and parents

We're looking for individuals who:

  • Are calm, patient and nurturing
  • Can remain positive and composed in challenging situations
  • Have strong communication and relationship‑building skills
  • Understand the importance of emotional development in early years
  • Can follow behaviour plans and work closely with teachers and SENCOs
  • Are passionate about helping children reach their full potential
  • Are willing to learn (SEMH experience helpful but not essential)

Desirable Experience/Qualifications

  • GCSE/O'Level or equivalent
  • Experience working with primary-aged children
  • Experience supporting SEMH, challenging behaviour or vulnerable young people (desirable)
  • A valid driving licence due to location
