About us
UCL is a radically different university. Founded in 1826 in the heart of London, we were the first university in England to welcome students of any religion and the first to welcome women to university education. Today UCL has over 50,000 students and 16,000 staff and is one of the world's top 10 universities.
The Vice-President External Engagement (VPEE) team delivers communications and marketing activity for UCL, working to ensure UCL's public prominence, reputation and influence reflects the university's excellence in knowledge creation, education, and innovation.
About the role
As Public Affairs Manager at UCL, you will sit at the heart of the university's engagement with political and policy audiences, helping to shape how UCL's expertise informs public debate and decision-making. Working closely with senior leaders, academics and colleagues across External Engagement, you will ensure that UCL's public affairs engagement is strategic, well-coordinated and impactful.
In this role, you will support and help deliver a programme of public affairs activity to engage with senior policymakers and provide timely insight on developments in politics and public policy.
You will also help keep the public affairs function running smoothly day to day. This includes project managing engagement activity, tracking stakeholders and relationships, coordinating meetings and events, and ensuring colleagues across UCL are well prepared to engage confidently with political audiences. Producing high-quality briefing notes, presentations and reports will be a central part of your work, enabling UCL's leaders and academic community to engage effectively and authoritatively.
This is a permanent role available on a hybrid working basis (up to 2-days onsite per week) and available to start from 30 March 2026.
Job Ref: B23-00179
Closing Date: 24-02-2025 - 23:59 (UK time)
About you
You will bring experience of working with national and/or regional and/or local government, or within a public affairs or policy environment, with a proven track record of delivering impactful public affairs programmes or campaigns. You understand how policy is made and how government operates, and you are comfortable building and maintaining strong, credible relationships with policymakers, agencies and other organisations that influence public policy.
You will have a strong grasp of politics and current affairs across the international, national and local landscape, alongside an understanding of the higher education and research policy environment. Organised, proactive and collaborative, you will be confident supporting the operation of a modern public affairs function and juggling multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.
You will enjoy working with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders, and will be skilled at producing clear, persuasive written materials-such as briefings, reports, presentations and case studies-on complex policy issues for diverse audiences.
Working within the Public Affairs team, as well as with Media, Communications, Social Media and Events teams, you will help build understanding of UCL's mission, vision and strategic priorities, anticipate emerging issues, and create opportunities to promote UCL's work and influence.
