Introduction to YSJ University
York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.
As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.
The Team
International Programmes works within YSJ Global, supporting our international students with their language and academic skills first and foremost. We work alongside the other teams in the directorate, especially international recruitment, to attract and retain students, helping them join their degrees, succeed academically and work hard all the way through to graduation. We want our students to have all the support and help they require to really enjoy and get the most out of their studies at YSJ. Helping to grow our international student cohort is a key project for us, and this tutor will play a key role in networking, liaising with contacts around the university and externally, and promoting our services to help our students and our academics in every school. We do all we can to support the teams in YSJ Global, and this has created opportunities to participate in areas outside of teaching and day-to-day practice, making International Programmes a particularly unique team.
The role
We are seeking a sociable, enthusiastic, adaptable and highly motivated individual to join our team. We provide support to our international students, regarding their English and academic skills. This is through bespoke courses, tutorials and workshops, as well as face-to-face and online sessions. We are a team of six and work closely with stakeholders all around the university. Successful candidates will be able to contribute to developing and delivering teaching materials and assessments, and all other related duties as required to meet the needs of the team. There are also lots of opportunities for professional development and all team members are involved in many interesting projects. As we are involved in many steering groups, an interest in business, admissions and strategy would be especially beneficial for this role, as there are many avenues to explore at YSJ and projects to support.
This role is full-time (37 hours per week), in person but with flexibility for some remote working, based at our beautiful York campus. The new tutor will have their own desk, locker and work station in our lovely staff office with the other tutors. We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible, as the summer is our busiest time. This is an exciting opportunity to work creatively on growing projects and apply your ideas to helping students and furthering your own development. You will be a people person, keen to network and grow the impact of our work around campus and beyond. This is not simply a teaching role, but an opportunity to learn and become involved in lots of areas. International Programmes was a PIEoneer Awards finalist for Language Training Provider of the Year a few years ago, due to all the growing projects undertaken and the innovative work we are accomplishing. We also offer HEA pathways and if you already have fellowship status, you would be encouraged to pursue the next level, and also encouraged to mentor other colleagues to help them achieve this.
Required skills and experience
Candidates should have a DELTA (or equivalent qualification in applied language teaching methodology) and experience of teaching EAP in UK Higher Education. An interest and awareness of emerging technologies would also be very helpful. We deliver presessional and insessional courses, among many others, and candidates need to have significant experience of this type of material and delivery. Knowledge of assessments such as IELTS is also vital. If you have experience of teaching international students at a very high level, we would really like to hear from you. We are a member institution of BALEAP and deliver the very highest quality teaching and support to our international students, to help them reach their goals at York St John and in their future careers. For the right candidate, this role offers a lot of scope to grow, develop and expand, and we look forward to receiving your application if this sounds of interest to you.
