We warmly welcome applications for the role of Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering Structures within Aston University’s Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering. The individual will bring recognised national expertise and a growing international presence in aerospace engineering structures. The ideal candidate will contribute thoughtful, innovative leadership to research areas such as smart structures, multifunctional materials, computational modelling, stress, fatigue and damage analysis, optimisation, testing and certification—while also embracing sustainability and forward‑thinking manufacturing considerations.

We are especially interested in hearing from applicants with experience in lightweight and sustainable materials, multifunctional and smart material systems, advanced simulation using finite element analysis (FEA), and testing and analysis that support airworthiness. If you are excited about contributing to a supportive, collaborative academic community and advancing research that makes a meaningful impact, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Candidates should also demonstrate a student-centred teaching focus with experience and enthusiasm to lecture subjects related to aerospace engineering structures and related laboratory practices, overseeing safety standards. The successful applicant will be expected to develop teaching materials, teach, and assess students using a variety of formats, including lectures and tutorials for the whole class and individual projects. An effective and evidence-based track record in learning and teaching using these modes is essential, as is a record of positive student feedback. In addition, the ideal candidate is expected to play a key role as Programme Director of the School’s new provision in Aerospace Engineering, leading education and student experience in this area while contributing significantly to enhance external engagement with the main stakeholders.

Applicants must have a first degree and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant discipline. We would also expect applicants to have achieved professional recognition as Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) or above or be willing to achieve this once in post. It is desirable that applicants are familiar with a virtual learning environment (VLE) software such as Blackboard or Moodle.

We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building a diverse team. We especially encourage women/female applicants.

Informal enquiries about this post may be made to Prof Claire Lucas (c.lucas@aston.ac.uk) or Prof Ricardo Sodré (j.sodre@aston.ac.uk).

This role may meet the requirements for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

If you require sponsorship, Aston University will assess your eligibility if you are shortlisted for the role.

Please note we are unable to confirm individual eligibility before shortlisting.
