Junior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care
1 year fixed term contract
We have an opportunity within our friendly team to join us on a fixed term 12 month contract
The critical care unit at St. Helier's has 22 beds, which can be used flexibly for level 2 and level 3 patients.
In addition, there are 2 step down beds, which are used for patients who are level 1 andready to go to
ward. Currently 8 consultant intensivists and 16 junior doctors staff the unit. The unit is always staffed in
the way that experienced trainee will supervise those who are new to ITU. The Anaesthetics & Critical
Care department also covers a Level 2 facility at Epsom Hospital.
The Anaesthetics & Critical Care Department of Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust covers
2 critical care units plus a wide variety of elective, day case and emergency surgeryacross two sites. The
department is comprised of 32 consultants, 4 associate specialists, 9 staff grades, and 6 speciality
doctors. A variable number of CT/ACCS and ST trainees rotate through the unit during the year. In
addition to providing cover for the two critical care units, the department covers the two obstetrics units
and provides anaesthesia at both sites. Emergency surgery for all specialities has been concentrated at St
Helier Hospital, while the majority of the elective work is performed at Epsom General Hospital.
St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).
After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
There is a robust governance structure in place and junior doctors get the benefit of having a
comprehensive education program which includes M & M, journal club, and dedicated teaching
sessions. The post holder will be encouraged to attend and contribute to these educational activities
and also have the opportunity to join the local and regional teaching provided for the trainees. All the
fellows will have named clinical and educational supervisors that will provide anopportunity to
formulate learning plans and monitor educational needs and career development.
