The post offered is a Fixed term locum consultant psychiatrist position in emergency liaison psychiatry for general adults and the older adult population. Pending royal college approval. This is in the exciting new Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MCHAS) being established in the Northern Boroughs of NLFT following the successful initiation of the model in Camden & Islington.

This post is working in emergency liaison across the acute Trusts of the Northern boroughs of NLFT (Barnet General, North Middlesex University Hospital and newly formed Chase Farm Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS)), based at the new Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service opening at Chase Farm Hospital in Spring 2026. This is the second MHCAS opening in NLFT after the highly successful and award winning MHCAS established in the Southern Boroughs.

This is a new post with funding agreed as part of the inauguration of this important new sister service to the Southern MHCAS at the Highgate site.

Please see JD / SPEC for more details on the Locum Consultant - Emergency liaison/ crisis care (Chase Farm) role at Chase Farm Hospital

Our Five-Year Strategy:
1. We will provide consistently high-quality care closer to home.
2. With our partners in North London and each borough we will ensure equity of outcome for all
3. We will offer great places to work, providing staff with supportive environment to deliver outstanding care.
4. We will be more effective as an organisation by pioneering research, quality improvement and technology.

The Postholder will work closely with the other liaison Consultants and the Medical Director, associate clinical director, service director, service manager and team manager to provide strategic clinical leadership to the multi-professional group and contribute to strategic direction of the unit and development of this care pathway.

The Post-holder will provide day to day clinical leadership to an experienced Multi-disciplinary team. This will include undertaking routine daily senior medical reviews and MHAA’s at MHCAS; liaising with emergency department liaison teams/medical staff (when patients move between the two services); providing brief clinical reports and handover information to inpatient ward staff prior to transfer of patients subsequently detained under the mental health act and providing clinical guidance to other team members as and when required. The post-Holder will participate in a daily team supervision/clinical handover de-briefing session for overnight on-call Core and Higher trainees (when handing over clinical responsibility to the team’s medical team).

The post holder will work in an integrated way with the rest of the Liaison, HBPOS and MHCAS teams, seeing MHAA’s/Section 136 referrals for both general and older age adults as they are admitted to the centre. The HBPOS and MHCAS liaison teams provide a 24/7 integrated model of care for all patients. The team manager and nursing complement in the team will be responsible for triage work, confirming suitability of the referrals, managing referrals and liaising with emergency departments/LAS/Police in relation to patients who require acute medical intervention (either before or after arrival at the HBPOS/MHCAS unit) but the postholder may also be expected to assist with this process when a medical opinion I required. They will also assist other team members in their development of skills relevant to the assessment and care of general and older adult patients.

The Post-holder and the team are also expected to forge close links with other Liaison Consultants in the Trust based across the organization.
