Lead with purpose: Help protect people and the environment in mining areas. Work that delivers real‑world outcomes, every day.
Own the remit: Shape property, commercial and procurement legal advice for a national programme, with opportunities to expand into wider areas including subsidence, data protection and litigation.
Small team, big impact: Join a friendly, expert in‑house team who coach, collaborate and get things done.

- Leadership: A track record of developing people and services, with the ability to explain complex topics clearly.
- Delivery mindset: Calm under pressure, organised, detail‑focused and confident in managing multiple deadlines.
- Relationship skills: Comfortable working with senior stakeholders and strategic suppliers.
Public sector in‑house experience is helpful, but not essential.

- Inclusive culture: We value different thinking styles and lived experiences.
- Impact you can see: You’ll contribute to work that supports mining communities and environments across the UK.
About The Role

You’ll support decision‑making on property matters, commercial contracts and procurement, and you’ll play a key role in our priority programmes including the treatment of saline mine water from inland coalfields.
You’ll work closely with our Head of Legal & Records, supporting the Board and Executive Leadership Team to deliver clear, practical counsel on strategic decisions and emerging risks.
What you’ll do
- Lead the team: Set direction, develop capability, coach strengths, and ensure a resilient and efficient service from our in-house and external specialists.
- Be the expert: Draft and negotiate transfers, contracts and complex agreements; provide timely, practical advice under pressure and against competing deadlines.
- Safeguard compliance: Interpret new legislation, advise on impacts and ensure the Authority remains an intelligent client when using external legal providers.
- Influence stakeholders: Engage confidently with DESNZ, DEFRA and other government bodies; build trusted internal and external relationships.
- Support wider work: Provide resilience across the wider legal function, including litigation and data protection, and contribute to research and development projects.
